May 20, 2002 UNM PHILOSOPHY PROFESSOR NAMED PRESIDENT OF THE SOCIETY OF PHILOSOPHERS IN AMERICA University of New Mexico Professor of Philosophy Fred Gillette Sturm was recently elected president of the Society of Philosophers in America (SOPHIA). SOPHIA represents a group of philosophers throughout the United States who are committed to encouraging a pluralistic approach to the teaching of philosophy in colleges and universities, fostering dialogue between philosophers of the European, East and South Asian philosophical traditions, and assisting third and fourth world intellectuals in making their philosophic thought available to a world-wide audience. Sturm was named a member in perpetuity of the Brasilian Academy of Philosophy. He is an honorary member of the Institute of Brasilian Philosophy, and currently serves as president of the Society of Iberian and Latin American Thought. He is also an honorary professor on the faculty of the Shaanxi Teachers University (Xian, PRC), an overseas member of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, and a member of the International Sinological Research Committee of the University of Chinese Culture in Taiwan. # # #
