UNM RANKS AMONG TOP 100 COLLEGES FOR HISPANICS
The University of New Mexico (UNM) ranks among the top 100 colleges for Hispanics
according to rankings published in the May 6 issue of Hispanic Outlook in
Higher Education.
UNM also stands out as the top institution in New Mexico of the four that
made the list - UNM, New Mexico State, New Mexico Highlands and University
of Phoenix, Albuquerque campus.
New Mexico stands out for having four institutions on the list.
UNM is ranked 15th on the list for conferring bachelor's degrees to Hispanics,
22nd for master's degrees and 14th for Ph.D's.
Of the 2,723 bachelor's degrees conferred, Hispanics earned 706; for master's,
976 degrees were conferred, 145 of them were earned by Hispanics; for Ph.D's,
UNM awarded 184 with 17 going to Hispanics.
On Hispanic Outlook's list of Carnegie classified institutions by Hispanic
enrollment, UNM ranks 6th. As such, UNM ranks at the top among Research I
Carnegie classified institutions.
UNM also ranks 9th on their list of Hispanic administrators and faculties
in schools in the top 100 four-year schools with high Hispanic enrollments.
That list indicates that UNM has the 3rd largest number of Hispanic faculty
and administrators, behind only the University of Miami, with 355 and UCLA
with 234. UNM has 215 Hispanic administrators and faculty members.
UNM made several of Hispanic Outlook's lists of specific professional degrees
by academic program, including 4th in pharmacy, 9th in medicine, 9th in biological
sciences and 10th in English/literature.
The statistical information was derived from data gathered by the National
Center for Education Statistics, a part of the United States Department of
Education.
