UNM GENERAL LIBRARY BLOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS

The University of New Mexico General Library and United Blood Services (UBS), with support from campus organizations, recently hosted a two-day blood drive. The blood drive resulted in the collection of 226 pints of blood.

Because of this blood drive, the UNM community helps 678 people. Trauma patients, such as those injured in car accidents, will receive red blood cells. Plasma will be provided to burn victims and platelets will help chemotherapy patients, says Nancy Troutman, UBS community relations representative.

"We are very pleased with the campus response to this community need. We know that many UNM people donated blood immediately following the events of Sept. 11. Yet, we still had many people express interest in donating and many who were able, in fact, to donate," says Jan Dodson Barnhart, library special assistant to the dean. She adds that the opportunity to work closely with many student groups, especially Student Special Events, made this event special and successful. Some individuals unable to donate blood made a cash contribution.

"United Blood Services is extremely pleased with the support UNM continues to provide to the community blood program. In this time of uncertainty, it is heartwarming to see the outpouring of generous people who donated at the General Library drive. The library continues to be the example all other campus organizations can follow."

This was the fourth year the library sponsored the blood drive. The library has won awards for the most successful campus blood drive three years in a row.
