Duke professor to deliver distinguished lecture
Duke Professor Matt Cartmill will deliver the XIII Journal of Anthropological
Research Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the UNM
Anthropology Lecture Hall, room 163.
Cartmill will present PaleoanthropologyScience or Mythological
Charter? The lecture will explore whether the discipline of paleo-anthropology
is simply the telling of origin myths or in fact a predictive historical science.
He will also lead a seminar, Primate Gaits and Primate Origins,
Friday, Nov. 16 at noon in UNM Anthropology, room 178.
Cartmill is a professor of biological anthropology and anatomy and is the author
of numerous articles, book chapters and books. His book, A View to a Death
in the Morning: Hunting and Nature through History, Harvard Press, 1993,
is award-winning. His anthropological interests and expertise range from hominoid
locomotion and evolution, to the origins of language and hunting, to the nature
and philosophy of science, to tarsiers and Bambi.
Both events are free and open to the public and are wheelchair accessible.
J.A.R. is an international quarterly journal of general anthropology, published
by UNM since 1945.
