UNM Foundation Elects New Board Members
The University of New Mexico Foundation has re-elected two board members and
elected eight new board members to its Board of Directors. They include: Irene
Boone, Los Alamos, and Arlene High, Gallup, who were re-elected. First-term
board members include Dorothy Wade Black, Santa Fe; Judith Lavender, Chicago;
Anne Jarvis OBrien, Washington, D.C.; B.G. (Bill) Taylor, Midland, Texas,
and Douglas M. Brown, Ernest B. (Bernie) Butterfield, Miguel Rios, Jr. and Leonard
R. Sanchez, all from Albuquerque. Board terms are to June 30, 2005.
In addition, serving in an ex-officio capacity for one year is Connie Beimer,
president of the UNM Alumni Association Board of Directors. Mary D. Poole is
the chair of the UNM Foundation Board and Leslie Elgood, development director
for the University, is president of the UNM Foundation Board.
Boone, a pediatrician in private practice in Los Alamos, graduated with distinction
from George Washington University Medical School. She has been a volunteer faculty
member at the UNM School of Medicine for more than 20 years. She is active in
the in the Los Alamos community and was recently named as one of the only 15
women in the publication, History of Los Alamos. She is also a member
and past president of the Los Alamos Womens Golf Association.
High, an alumna of UNM, is the chair of the UNM Foundation Development Committee
and is a licensed realtor and owner of Professional Travel Services in Gallup.
She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Gallup Chamber of Commerce
and serves on the Economic Development Committee. High is the chairwoman of
the Board of Rehoboth McKinley Christian Hospital.
Black, a resident of Santa Fe, is the director, former vice president and corporate
secretary of SBE, Inc. The company has a regional airport in Santa Fe and medi-vac
and executive airlines in Dallas and Santa Fe. She also is corporate secretary
of Sun Valley Aviation, Inc., Hailey, Idaho, and general manager of the Black
Ranch and Cattle Company, Albuquerque. She received a bachelors degree
from UNM.
A UNM graduate, Lavender is an active community volunteer living in Chicago.
She established and is the sole proprietor of Tic Tac Grow-Childrens Enrichment
Program, the Tribal Accents-Home Shows for Native American Crafts and Callalily-Clothing
Design and Interior Decorating.
OBrien, a partner in the law firm of Arnold & Porter, Washington,
D.C., is also a UNM alumna. Her practice includes estate planning, probate,
charitable planning and estate and trust administration. OBrien received
her bachelors degree from the UNM College of Arts & Sciences; she
holds an MBA from George Washington University and graduated magna cum laude
from Washington College of Law, American University.
Taylor owns a consulting business in Midland, Texas. He is the former chairman
and CEO of Halliburton Services. He received his mechanical engineering degree
from UNM and has been honored as one of the Schools Distinguished Alumni
in 1981. A member of the Universitys Tom L. Popejoy Society, Taylor supports
two engineering endowments: the B.G. Taylor Graduate Award in Mechanical Engineering
and the B. G. Taylor Laboratory Endowment in Civil Engineering. He is also a
member of the UNM School of Engineering Board of Visitors.
Albuquerque resident Brown is president and CEO of Tuition Plan, a not-for-profit
consortium of 120 independent colleges and universities across the country.
This organization, founded in 1996, allows parents to purchase tuition certificates
that lock in current tuition rates at participating schools. The Tuition Plan
allows colleges to compete with government-funded tuition plans in 34 states.
Brown is chairman of Talbot Financial Services, a division of Talbot Agency.
Brown is an alumnus and trustee of Stanford University. He is chair of The Presidents
Club for UNM.
Butterfield, an Albuquerque resident and UNM alumnus, is president of B &
B Inc., a commercial real estate rental firm. He is also the owner and chairman
of the board of Butterfield Jewelers. Butterfield Jewelers has been in business
for more than 70 years, involving three generations of the Butterfield family.
Butterfield serves on the Board of the Better Business Bureau.
Rios is chairman and CEO of Orion International, Albuquerque. He received the
Male Minority Entrepreneur of the Year Award in October 2000 from the U.S. Department
of Commerce and the Small Business Administration. He and his wife co- founded
the company in 1985 to provide scientific analysis and technical support staffing
to federal agencies. Rios has been a member of the Anderson Schools of Management
Board. In addition to New Mexico, Orion International has offices in Massachusetts,
Washington, D.C., Virginia and Puerto Rico. His Ph.D. in physics is from the
University of Maryland.
Sanchez, a certified public accountant, is a partner in the accounting firm of Neff and Ricci, Albuquerque. He was named Financial Executive of the Year by IMAs Rocky Mountain Council in May 2000. He served on the National Association of State Boards of Public Accountancy (NASBA) from 1996 to 1998 as the Southwest Regional Director. He currently serves on NASBAs Examinations Committee. Sanchez also has been president of the Albuquerque Jaycees, the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce, and the UNM Lobo Club. He continues to serve on the boards of the UNM Lobo Club and Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce, in addition to being a member of the Albuquerque Economic Forum.
