ANDERSON SCHOOLS OF MANAGEMENT ANNOUNCE SECOND ANNUAL UP-AND-COMERS AWARD WINNERS

The Anderson Schools of Management at the University of New Mexico has announced the recipients of the Second Annual 2001 Up-and-Comers Awards. The 2001 class of Up-and-Comers includes individuals from nine communities across the state in 16 industry sectors. More than 130 people were nominated for the awards, with 40 honorees selected for recognition.

“This year’s class of winners represents a broad diversity of the state and we are very proud to be recognizing so many individuals who are already making a great difference in their work and community service,” said Howard L. Smith, dean of the Anderson Schools. “Through the Up-and-Comers Awards, we are saying congratulations for what these individuals have already done and are proud to celebrate the mark they will continue to make in New Mexico.”

The honorees are in agriculture: Jaime X. Castillo, extension staff development specialist, New Mexico State Cooperative Extension Service, Las Cruces; and Paul Gutierrez, state executive director, Farm Service Agency/United State Department of Agriculture, Albuquerque.

In architecture and planning: Christopher John Green, principal/landscape architect, Consensus Planning, Inc., Albuquerque; and John Douglas Heller, architect, Mullen Heller Architecture, PC, Albuquerque.

In the communications industry: Stephanie Ann Bullington, marketing manager, Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, Albuquerque; Harlan Mack McKosato, radio talk show host, KUNM, “Native America Calling,” Albuquerque; and Johnny Montoya, account supervisor, Rick Johnson and Company, Inc., Albuquerque.

In economic development: Sharlene Begay-Platero, industrial development specialist, Navajo Nation, Gallup; Melanie Hasslinger, research manager, Albuquerque Economic Development, Inc., Albuquerque; and Tim Alan With, real estate advisor, Grubb & Ellis/Lewinger Hamilton, Inc., Albuquerque.

In education: Kristianne Goff Clayton, school social worker, Lincoln Middle School, Rio Rancho; and Byron Kevin Cummings, assistant principal, Taylor Middle School, Albuquerque.

In engineering the honoree is Theresa L. Brooks, environmental engineer, Camp Dresser and McKee, Inc., Albuquerque.
Recipients in entrepreneurship include: Kirsten Cobb, president, Control Alt Delete, Inc., Albuquerque; and Scott Creagan, president, Graphic Connection, Albuquerque.

In finance: Eric Mark Anthony Herrera, REDW, LLC; Tylen L. Kattenhorn, financial consultant, Salomon Smith Barney; Fred W. Winter, Jr. partner, KPMG, LLP; and Warren Wylupski, financial coordinator, Sun Healthcare Group, all of Albuquerque.
Fine arts honorees: Douglas Carroll Cardwell, professional musician, New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, Albuquerque; Jennifer Chavez, artistic/executive director, Southwest Repertory Theatre Company, Albuquerque; and Ron Martinez-Looking Elk, artist/program development specialist, Society for the Preservation of American Indian Culture, Taos.

In the government category: Marcie Davis, director of Victim Services, New Mexico Attorney General’s office, Santa Fe; Alfred A. Park, state representative, New Mexico House of Representatives, Albuquerque; and Stephine Poston, public relations analyst, Pueblo of Sandia, Bernalillo.

Recipients in international business include: Frederick Scott Bryant, president and owner, International Technology and Trade Ventures, Albuquerque; and Jerry Pacheco, director of marketing, Santa Teresa Real Estate Development, Santa Teresa.
In the area of law: F. Michael Hart, shareholder, Eaton, Martinez, Hart and Valdez, PC, Albuquerque; and Michelle Henrie, attorney, Rodey, Dickason, Sloan, Akin and Robb, PA, Albuquerque.

In medicine: Denise Cuellar, pharmacy manager, Walgreen’s, Albuquerque; Teresa M. Lohnes, physical therapist, Paragon Rehabilitation, Albuquerque; and Phillip A. Rivera, vice president and CFO, Memorial Medical Center, Las Cruces.
Nonprofit management recipients include: Diane Harrison Ogawa, executive director, PNM Foundation, Albuquerque; Maralie M. Waterman, executive director, Alzheimer’s Association, New Mexico Chapter, Albuquerque; and Anne Haines Yatskowitz, president and CEO, ACCION New Mexico, Albuquerque.

Small business recipients: Lori Arshawsky, president, XtraMark, Corrales; Tamara Stevenson Bradley, president, Bradley and Associates, Inc., Albuquerque; John B. Edward, owner/president, The Edward Group, Albuquerque; and Henry J. Evans, president and CEO, Advantage Printing Specialists, Albuquerque.

The lone recipient in the science and technology category is Hong Q. Hou, vice president, EMCORE Corporation, Albuquerque.

The recipients will be honored at the second annual Up-and-Comers luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Crowne Plaza Pyramid in Albuquerque. This year’s featured speaker is Steve Wells, president of Los Alamos National Bank (LANB). Wells was selected to speak based on LANB’s commitment to quality. The New Mexico corporation was the first bank in the nation to be awarded the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. The emcee for the event is KRQE Channel 13 anchorman Dick Knipfing.

The program is sponsored with underwriting gifts provided by Wells Fargo Bank, Andersen and Charter companies. Media sponsors include KRQE and KUNM. Additional support is provided by Quality New Mexico and CenturyPlus.
