Noted Labor Economist Daniel Hamermesh To Conduct Seminar At UNM Economics Department
Daniel
Hamermesh, a renowned labor economist and professor at the University of Texas-Austin,
will host a seminar at the University of New Mexico titled, The Demand
for Variety: The Household Production Perspective, Friday, Nov. 1, 2001,
from 2 - 3:30 p.m. in room 1052 in the UNM Economics Department.
Hamermeshs seminar will address and provide evidence that education actually
makes people more productive in household activities, including leisure. He
suggests that product diversity pervades every modern marketplace and economists
have devoted substantial attention to firms decisions about the supply
of variety. Hamermeshs study looks at the consumers side by discussing
the demand for variety.
Hamermesh is the Everett Hale Centennial Professor of Economics at UT-Austin.
He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a research associate of the National
Bureau of Economic Research and of the Institute for Study of Labor. He has
held visiting professorships at universities in the United States, Europe, Australia
and Asia.
His research concentrates on labor issues, time use and unusual applications
of labor economics. Some of his authored works include Labor Demand, Princeton
Press, 1993; The Economics of Work and Pay, and a wide array of articles in
labor economics in the leading general and specialized economics journals.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago in 1965 and his Ph.D. from Yale in 1969. He taught from 1969-73 at Princeton and from 1973-93 at Michigan State.
