UNM NAMES NEW DIRECTOR OF INT'L PROGRAMS AND STUDIES
Richard Holder, deputy provost, Academic Affairs, announced that Thomas E. Bogenschild has been selected director of International Programs and Studies at the University of New Mexico. He will assume the position Jan. 3, 2006.
Bogenschild has been director of International and Off-Campus Programs at the University of Notre Dame since 1998. He served as director of that school's international study programs from 1995-98. Previously, he served as associate director of Program in Latin American Studies at Princeton University and also held a post at the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
Holder said that after conducting a national search and bringing three candidates to campus, Bogenschild was “the winner.”
“He brings experience, especially in fundraising that will help the department out. He is interested in expanding our student exchange and study abroad programs, something we want,” Holder said.
Bogenschild has developed or facilitated multidisciplinary short-term study tours in Japan, the Czech Republic, Western Australia, Slovenia and in Russia. He has also provided oversight for other programs in France, Austria, Japan, Spain, Chile, Greece, Egypt and Russia.
A Latin Americanist by training, Bogenschild said that he was drawn to UNM because of its “stellar reputation in Latin American Studies.”
He said that he wants to see more UNM students study and research abroad.
“The current percentage of UNM students studying abroad is one percent. It is 60 percent at Notre Dame. A lot has to do with money, but we have lots of opportunities. New Mexico is a multicultural and exciting place. It is useful to look at that from a distance,” he said.
Bogenschild said that UNM's Latin American and Iberian Institute is doing a good job in connecting UNM with those regions.
“We need to develop programs in other places. I want to encourage more faculty with expertise in different areas to engage in world affairs through research and study abroad,” he said.
After 10 years at Notre Dame Bogenschild said he was ready for a new challenge.
“We are excited about this appointment,” Holder said.
