Professor Edward Bedrick will be one of 48 members to be named Fellow

- Dr. Arup Das,
associate professor of Ophthalmology at the UNM School of Medicine,
recently received a $1.2 million grant from the National Institutes
of Health to prevent blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy and macular
degeneration. Das, who will be collaborating with Paul McGuire, associate
professor of Cell Biology and Physiology, is developing alternative
pharmacological approaches to suppress neovascularization in

Professor of Sociology Jane Hood has been elected vice president of
the Pacific Sociology Association (PSA) for 2004. Established in 1929,
the PSA is the professional association of sociologists for the western

- The UNM Water
Resources Program and nine other universities across five continents
team up in the Universities Partnership for Transboundary Waters initiative.
The long term goal of the partnership is to bring the capabilities of

- Camila A. Alire
was selected dean of Library Services. Alire's appointment is effective

- Teresita E. Aguilar
was appointed dean of Graduate Studies at UNM effective Sept. 1, 2002.
Aguilar has been associate dean of the College of Education and Integrative

- Dr. Howard Waitzkin,
a professor in the UNM School of Medicine's Department of Family and
Community Medicine, received a 2002 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation
award. Waitzkin, who was one of 184 artists, scholars and scientists
selected nationally, received the fellowship for a study of Economic

- UNM is one of four
state institutions ranked among the top 100 colleges for Hispanics according
to rankings published in the May 6 issue of Hispanic Outlook in Higher
Education. UNM, ranked 15th for conferring bachelor's degrees to Hispanics,
also stands out as the top institution in New Mexico of the four that
made the list including UNM, New Mexico State, New Mexico Highlands

- Thomas F. Turner,
assistant professor of Biology, has received a $500,000 grant from the
National Science Foundation's Faculty Early Career Development Program.
The award is designed to build an education and research program focusing
on the collection of fishes in the Museum of Southwestern Biology using
state-of-the-art techniques for students and those interested in water

- Dr. Ken Miller,
professor and associate dean at the UNM College of Nursing, was recently

- UNM is ranked 24th
on Hispanic Magazine's top 25 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics
in the March 2002 issue. UNM is the only school in the state to be ranked.

- Five members of
the New Mexico Disaster Medical Assistance Team traveled to Salt Lake
City to provide medical care for the 2002 Winter Olympics. At the request
of the FBI and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, one physician,
two paramedics, one nurse and one emergency medical technician will
be deployed from the NMDMAT. They will joined about 30 other teams at

Computer Science associate professor, was mentioned in The Economist
for his continuing research interests on artificial life models and

- Researchers at
UNM's Institute for Social Research are part of a new interagency workgroup
in Bernalillo County. The team received a two-year, $229,000 grant from
National Institute of Justice to conduct research the workgroup can
use to develop strategic interventions in response to local gun violence.

- The UNM Student
Health Center's laboratory received a grade of 100 percent from the
National Clinical Laboratory Accreditation Association and will be considered
for an annual "Laboratory Excellence Award." Only six labs in the country

- The UNM Health
Sciences Center, as a member of the New Mexico Tribal Healthcare Alliance,
has been chosen as one of eight locations nationally for the establishment
of American Indian Research Centers. The research centers are being
created through $3 million in funding by the U.S. Indian Health Service
to focus on medical research relevant to Native American communities.

- Mark Childs was
named director of the Design Planning Assistance Center at the UNM School
of Architecture. Childs has been a part-time and adjunct professor during

- A Human Resources
report on administrative hiring shows that women and minority candidates
are being hired at UNM in record numbers and that a majority of hires
in this category were internal promotions. Overall, UNM hired 31 percent
minority administrators in 1990-00 and 30 percent in 2000-01. Female
administrators were hired at rates of 57 and 61 percent respectively

- Three UNM faculty

Awards for Teaching Excellence awarded by the UNM College of Arts and

- Dr. Laura Roberts,
associate professor and vice chair in the Department of Psychiatry at
the UNM Health Sciences Center, has been selected as the Editor-in-Chief

peer-reviewed journal dedicated to psychiatric education and professional

- Yvonne Pena, students
affairs specialist in the Dean of Students office, received the Region
IV-West Outstanding New Professional from the National Association of
Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). The award is presented to
the individual who has been in the profession less than five years,

- The UNM Bookstore
was the cover story in the September issue of College Store Executive,
a national publication on news and merchandizing in the college store
industry. The article, "Turning Complaints into Compliments," addresses
how the staff listened to complaints from UNM faculty, staff and students

- Bob Busch, UNM
Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering professor, becomes the
first faculty member from any institution to receive the national award
for distinguished service from the American Nuclear Society's Nuclear
Criticality Safety Division. The award was given for his dedicated service
in many leadership roles, as well as his major contributions in the
advancement of criticality safety training and nuclear engineering education.

- Dr. Sam Keith,
chair of the Department of Psychiatry, received the Arthur P. Noyes
Award by the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression

- Clinicians and
scientists at the UNM Health Sciences Center have discovered a rare
hereditary muscle disease in a population of Hispanic New Mexicans.
The study, published in the latest edition of the Journal of the American
Medical Association, identifies 216 affected individuals through four
generations who have the disease Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy.

- John Probasco,
biochemistry major and Alamogordo native, was one of 32 U.S. students
who will receive the 2002 Rhodes scholarship to study at Oxford University
in England. For the second time since 1999, a UNM student has been selected
a Rhodes Scholar shortly after receiving the prestigious Truman Scholarship.

- Political Science
Department doctoral candidates Francois Gelineau and Eric Jepsen were
awarded highly competitive dissertation fellowships from the National
Science Foundation. The department has earned five of these awards during
the past five years ranking it third nationally for political science
departments receiving the award. In recent NSF rankings, the department
ranked 37th nationally in total research and development expenditures.

Gary Scharnhorst was elected chair of the American Literature Section

- Architecture professor
Anne Taylor was the only individual in the western U.S. invited recently
to present at a conference on school facility planning at the Chautauqua
Institution in New York. Attended by architects from all over the eastern
U.S., Taylor presented her design academy educational concept. The Design

- The Anderson Schools
of Management was one of only 16 schools worldwide that were recognized
as "showing significant activities in social impact management" in the
2001 Beyond Grey Pinstripes report released by the World Resources Institute
and The Aspen Institute for Social Innovation through Business. The
report, which made headlines in The Wall Street Journal and The New
York Times, said UNM's greatest strength is in terms of student coursework.

- The UNM School
of Engineering is ranked 16th out of the top 100 federally funded institutions
regarding the impact of research papers over the years 1996-2000 by
the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). UNM had 858 citations
from 323 papers. The list is published in ISI's Science Citation Index
which measures the number of times a paper is cited by other researchers.

- Roger L. Schluntz,
dean of the UNM School of Architecture and Planning, has been appointed
to a three-year term on the National Architectural Accrediting Board
(NAAB). Based in Washington, D.C., the NAAB is the sole agency authorized
to accredit professional architecture degree programs in the United
States. Schluntz was selected for the 13-member board by the Association
of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, where he served as executive

- The UNM Foundation/Development
office has been ranked in The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual ranking
of the top 400 nonprofit organizations. UNM entered the list at No.
393, the first time it has earned recognition in the publication. The
Philanthropy 400 survey ranks 400 of the nation's largest nonprofit

- The PURSUE program
at UNM continues to surpass its goals and reaches out to various departments
campus-wide. Since its creation in August 1998, PURSUE (Preparation
for University Research of Students in Undergraduate Education) has
funded 128 research and education projects and has assisted more than
300 undergraduates, 60 graduate students, 50 faculty members and 30

- Dr. Karl Johnson,
a world famous virologist and adjunct professor with joint appointments
in the Biology Department and the School of Medicine, was recently awarded
"La Orden de Manuel Amador Guerrero Medal" from Panama. The medal, named
after Guerrero, the first president of Panama in 1903, is the highest

- Eight people and
organizations received recognition during the Health Sciences Center's
(HSC) fifth annual Community Partnerships awards ceremony. The awards
were presented to people and organizations that have partnered with
clinical, educational and research components across the HSC's campus.
The HSC's first vice president, Dr. Jane Henney, was the guest of honor

- UNM is ranked fifth
out of the top 100 federally funded institutions regarding the impact
of materials science papers over the years 1996-2000 by the Institute
for Scientific Information (ISI). The list is published in ISI's Science
Citation Index, which measures the number of times a paper is cited

- UNM's Center for
Alcohol, Substance Abuse and Addictions Assistant Research Professor,
Dr. Natasha Slesnick, has been awarded two grants from the National
Institutes of Health for $2.7 million for Project STAR (Serving and
Treating Albuquerque's Runaways) and Project TEAM (Treatment Evaluation
and Adult Mentoring) programs that will provide and test treatment for

- Dr. David Stuart,
associate provost for Academic Affairs and professor of Anthropology
and Architecture and Planning, received an honorary Doctor of Humane
Letters degree, from West Virginia Wesleyan College recently. The degree
was awarded by unanimous vote of the faculty and Trustees of West Virginia
Wesleyan College to explicitly recognize Stuart's role in promoting

- Research conducted
by UNM biologists has been chosen by the National Science Foundation
(NSF) as one of the 50 discoveries made with NSF funding that have had
the most influence or biggest impact on the lives of Americans. Highlighted
in an NSF publication titled, "Nifty 50," the discoveries were chosen
from tens of thousands of NSF funded projects since its inception in

- UNM has received
a $2.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation's Integrative
Graduate Education and Research Traineeship program for a project titled,
"Cross-disciplinary Optics Research and Education." The grant is one
of only 22 of its type in the nation to be awarded this year out of

- UNM, in conjunction
with Albuquerque Public Schools, has been awarded a three-year grant
of more than $3 million from the United States Department of Education
to expand literacy-based after-school and summer programs in 10 of Albuquerque's

- The New Mexico
Disaster Medical Assistance Team, which includes Health Sciences Center
staff, returned to New Mexico Oct. 18 after spending 10 days at the
site of the World Trade Center towers in New York City. The team treated
injuries sustained by the recovery teams that worked to remove debris
and recover remains. Dr. Paul Roth, dean of the UNM School of Medicine
and team leader, filed daily reports from New York.
- The U.S. Department
of Commerce has awarded a grant of $835,534 to the UNM Arts of the Americas
Institute and the UNM Albuquerque High Performance Computing Center
to develop broadband Internet connections for New Mexico's tribal museums
and cultural centers. The one-of-a-kind project titled, "Cyber Sovereignty:
The Tribal Access Grid for Museums and Cultural Centers," paves the

- The newly created
Center for Intelligent Systems Engineering (ISE) at the UNM School of
Engineering serves two primary functions, says Peter Dorato, center
director. The ISE, which is funded by a $1 million grant from NASA renewable
for five years, encourages minority students to go to graduate school
and design and develop projects for NASA. The focus of the center is
on the design of intelligent systems with a high degree of autonomy,

- The UNM Anderson
Schools of Management announced the recipients of the Second Annual
2001 Up-and-Comers Awards. The 2001 class of Up-and-Comers includes
individuals from nine communities across the state in 16 industry sectors.
More than 130 people were nominated for the awards, with 40 honorees

- UNM School of Engineering
Professors Bernard Moret, Computer Science, and David Bader, Electrical
and Computer Engineering, have received more than $1.1 million in grants
this fall from the National Science Foundation to pursue research in
reconstructing evolutionary trees, known as "phylogenies." This research
program is being conducted in collaboration with the University of Texas

- Two UNM Earth and
Planetary scientists, Victor Polyak and Yemane Asmerom, have applied
high precision uranium-thorium dating to columnar stalagmites from caves
in the Guadalupe Mountains in southwestern New Mexico to document climate
change over the last 4,000 years in this region of the United States.

- UNM Associate Professor
Natasha Kolchevska has been awarded a $122,772 grant from the National
Endowment for the Humanities to conduct a national institute exploring
the music and performance of Tchaikovsky's opera, "Eugene Onegin," and
its relation to Russian culture. The grant will fund an interdisciplinary,
four-week institute for 25 high school teachers at UNM in summer 2002.

- For the sixth consecutive
year, UNM has been named in the annual report on America's 100 Best
College Buys designating the University as one of America's best college
educations for the cost. Institutional Research and Evaluation, Inc.
compiled the list from a survey of 1,488 accredited U.S. colleges and
universities offering four-year undergraduate degree programs. Of the

- The UNM School
of Medicine has named Dr. Pope Moseley as the new chair of the Department
of Internal Medicine. Moseley came to UNM in 1995 as a professor of
Internal Medicine and chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and
Critical Care. Since 2000 he has served as the School of Medicine associate
dean of Research and Graduate Studies. (10/3/01)
- The UNM School
of Law and the Robert O. Anderson Graduate Schools of Management at
UNM have been named to the top 10 in the country in their respective
areas for Hispanic students by the Hispanic Business magazine. The School
of Law was ranked fourth, while the Graduate Schools were ranked eighth.

- A UNM center is
the recipient of one of only five grants of its type in the nation from
the National Science Foundation, with participation of the Department
of Energy. The $100,000 grant will be used to hold a two-week interdisciplinary
institute in Argentina set for summer 2002. The grant was awarded to
the Consortium of the Americas for Interdisciplinary Science, a center
of the College of Arts and Sciences housed in the Physics Department.

- The UNM School
of Medicine Office of Cultural and Ethnic Programs received a $1.2 million
grant to fund the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) from the
U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of Health of
Professions, Division of Health Professions Diversity. The principal
investigator is Roberto Gomez, M.D., Associate Dean of Cultural and
Ethnic Programs. Carol Miller will serve as director and Terri Nicholson

- Professional engineer
Dr. Jerald Rounds has been named to fill the Associated General Contractors
Endowed Chair in Construction Management and Construction Engineering
at UNM. Rounds, who has 30 years of combined experience in academia
and the construction industry, will be responsible for both the undergraduate
and graduate construction division programs, research and industry outreach.

- Deepak Kapur, chair
and professor in the Computer Science Department at UNM, was awarded
a three-year, $401,523 grant from the Information Technology Research
Program of the National Science Foundation. Kapur will develop automated

- Paul Biderman,
director of the Judicial Education Center at the Institute of Public
Law at the UNM School of Law, was elected to a one-year term as President
of the National Association of State Judicial Educators at its annual
conference recently. The Association represents and offers educational

- The UNM Health
Sciences Center (HSC) was awarded a $750,000 grant to Support the UNM
Telehealth Outreach for Unified Community Health. Funding for the program,
a joint effort by the UNM HSC and the John A. Burns School of Medicine
in Hawaii, was appropriated by the U.S. Department Health and Human

- The American Political
Science Association honored UNM Professor of Political Science F. Chris
Garcia with the Frank J. Goodnow Award for Distinguished Service. The
award, named for the first president of the APSA is bestowed for outstanding
contributions to the development of the political science profession

- The UNM College
of Education and the UNM-Gallup Branch have been awarded a $211,986
grant from the U.S. Department of Education Title VII/Office of Bilingual
Education. The funds are the first installment from a grant expected
to total more than $1 million over five years to improve bilingual education

- UNM and Public
Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) officials announced the creation
of the PNM Chair in Microsystems, Commercialization & Technology. The
endowed Chair, originally funded by PNM in 1985, will be used to recruit
and support a faculty member in The Anderson Schools of Management and
the School of Engineering with a focus on microsystems and commercialization.

Law Barbara Bergman was profiled in the National Association of Criminal
Defense Lawyers publication, The Champion. Bergman was honored as the
2000 recipient of the group's most prestigious honor - the Robert C.

- The National Institute
of Nursing Research/National Institutes Research/National Institutes
of Health awarded a $336,408 grant to the UNM College of Nursing and
Professor Leah Albers to study lowering the rate of genital trauma to

- The UNM School
of Medicine received a $5,000 gift from CIGNA HealthCare, parent company
of Lovelace Health Systems recently. The donation will be used to help
fund the Randolph V. Seligman, M.D., Endowment in Obstetrics and Gynecology
at the UNM School of Medicine. Seligman is a professor emeritus at the

- UNM is one of 10
institutions nationally to receive a two-year, $200,000 grant from the
Pew Learning and Technology Program at the Center for Academic Transformation
as part of the Pew Grant Program in Course Redesign. The grant will
support the redesign of general psychology 105 at UNM using technology
to enhance learning and reduce costs. The principal investigator for
the grant is Gordon Hodge, associate professor in Psychology and UNM

- Baker Morrow, adjunct
associate professor of landscape architecture in the UNM School of Architecture
and Planning, has been named a Fellow by the American Society of Landscape
Architects (ASLA). He is the first UNM graduate and first native New
Mexican to receive the honor. The local ASLA chapter nominated Morrow

- Gabriella Gutierrez
was named associate dean for the UNM School of Architecture and Planning.
The appointment makes Gutierrez, a three-year faculty member, the second

- UNM is among colleges
and universities nationwide that received cash awards from the American
Automobile Association for campus programs that address impaired driving
prevention. The "UNM Designated Drivers Do It for Friends" winning program
is a partnership between UNM and local bars and restaurants providing
free, non-alcoholic drinks and waived or reduced cover charges for UNM

- New Mexico Wal-Mart
and Sam's Clubs have helped raise more than $131,000 benefiting Children's
Hospital of New Mexico in the past year. Donated money helps pay for
the life-saving medical equipment needed to provide the most advanced

announced that UNM received $35.3 million in private funds during the
2000-01 fiscal year. The amount constitutes a 12.4 percent increase
over fiscal year 1999-2000, and 6.9 percent more than its $33 million

- UNM distinguished
professor of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Jeff Brinker and graduate
student Dhaval Doshi are among six winners named in the National Collegiate
Inventors Competition. The winning entry, "Optically-Adjustable
Nanostructures," is a self-assembly approach to prepare photosensitive
porous thin-film nanostructures and developed lithographic procedures.

- Top executives
at UNM, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories
signed an agreement creating the New Mexico Nanoscience Alliance. The
Alliance will be open to all state institutions with interests in nanoscience.

- Sam Giammo, director
of public affairs for the UNM Health Sciences Center, was among 21 senior
practitioners selected for membership in the Public Relations Society
of America College of Fellows. The prestigious honor, based on lifetime
achievement, has been bestowed upon 314 members out of nearly 20,000
PRSA members since the establishment of the College in 1989. (8/8/01)
- The UNM School
of Medicine received a grant from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
to study the complications of diabetes. David VanderJagt, professor
in the UNM Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, received
a two-year, $200,000 grant to research the causes of diabetes complications.

of Medicine is one of 27 medical schools honored by the American Academy
of Family Medicine for its success in promoting the specialty of family
practice to medical students. More than 23 percent of UNM graduates
choose family practice for their residency and 35 percent practice in

Vasudev M. Kenkre has been awarded a one-year grant for $150,000 by
the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to encourage collaborations
of UNM/LANL with Latin American scientists under the auspices of the

of music Bradley R. Ellingboe was awarded his second consecutive award
