L. Gilfeather, who has served as executive director of the UNM High

UNM
Fall Semester enrollment is up 3.55 percent compared to a year ago,
according to the Official 2002 Fall Enrollment Report. As of the Sept.
6 census date, 24,705 students were attending UNM's main campus, compared
with 23,859 last year, making it the largest fall enrollment total
since fall 1999. According to Office of Academic Affairs, another
notable increase came in the area of evening and weekend enrollment
with a credit hour increase of 14.4 percent or 52,947 credit hours

Judy
Cartmell, associate controller of the UNM Health Sciences Center,
will chair a newly-formed Project Management Team that will implement
the financials component of the Electronic Management Information
Systems (EMIS) project. EMIS is a University-wide effort to reengineer

A. Ibarra, former vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University

- Chemistry Professor
Debra Dunaway-Mariano and graduate student Guofeng Zhang teamed up with
researchers at Boston University to get the first ever glimpse of a
chemical reaction in the process of transforming to the chemical product.

- Psychology Professor
Harold Delaney is one of 24 recipients of the first research grants
awarded for scientific studies on the phenomena of spiritual transformation
through the Metanexus Institute's ground-breaking Spiritual Transformation

- The National Science
Foundation has awarded $10,000 dissertation fellowships to Political
Science Department Ph.D. candidates Nancy Carrillo and Douglas Hecock.
The awards are the most prestigious available to graduate students in
the political science discipline. Fellowships are awarded based on the
research proposal's technical creativity and the project's educational

- The North American
Benthological Society (NABS), the largest organization of stream and
river ecologists in the world, has elected Biology Professor Clifford
Dahm as its president. NABS is an international scientific organization

- Chemistry Professor
Chris Enke has received the 2003 J. Calvin Giddings Award for Excellence
in Education presented by the Analytical Division of the American Chemical
Society. The top honor emphasizes higher education for analytical chemists
and recognizes Enke as one of the best analytical chemistry educators

- Michael Zeilik,
professor of physics and astronomy, has been selected as the 2003 recipient
of the Excellence in Introductory College Physics Teaching Award by

- Gary Scharnhorst,
professor of English, is the recipient of his fifth Fulbright to study
and teach in Germany next spring. Scharnhorst will teach at the University

- Louis Metzger,
a UNM Regent's Scholar and junior majoring in biochemistry, is a recipient
of the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Metzger was one of
300 students selected nationwide on the basis of academic merit from
a field of nearly 1,100 mathematics, science and engineering students

Maggie Werner-Washburne has been selected by the American Association
for the Advancement of Science as one of nine scientists to participate

- Professor Jim
Brown of the UNM Biology Department was awarded the Marsh Award for
Ecology at the British Ecological Society's winter meeting at the University
of York. The Marsh Award is presented annually and recognizes outstanding

- Robert Meyers,
associate director of the UNM Clinical Research Branch of the Center
on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addiction, has earned the 2002 Dan
Anderson Research Award from the Hazelden Foundation in Center City,
Minn. Meyers achieved the honor for documenting the effectiveness of
his Community Reinforcement and Family Training method for engaging

Helen Damico is this year's recipient of the Medieval Academy of America's
annual award for Outstanding Service to Medieval Studies. The award

National Institute on Drug Abuse named UNM as one of 17 nationwide
sites in a Clinical Trials Network to improve community-based treatment
of drug abuse and dependence. With start-up funding of $1.7 million,
and an estimated $10 million over a five-year period, this is one

Cajete was named director of Native American Studies (NAS) at UNM.
He is an associate professor with NAS and the College of Education.
A native of Santa Clara Pueblo, Cajete will sculpt curriculum in an

Researchers
from UNM and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography gained a novel
glimpse into fundamental Earth processes after studying a chain of
Central America's most active volcanoes. Their research, published
in the Aug. 16 issue of the journal Science, gives new insight into
the past and possibly the future of elements cycling between Earth's
underlying mantle and surface reservoirs such as the crust, oceans

program with the Escuela Agricola Panamericana (Zamorano) in Honduras

awarded Fulbright and Social Science Research Council dissertation

selected Edl Schamiloglu as recipient of a 2003 Good Will "Ambassador
Award." Schamiloglu is the director of the Pulsed Power, Beams and Microwaves

Corp. presented $17.5 million to the Next Generation Economy Inc.
at UNM's Manufacturing Training and Technology Center. Intel's donation
includes 74 pieces of equipment, including 6-inch-semiconductor manufacturing

tool donation is designed to accelerate microelectromechanical systems

Arthur H. Guenther of UNM's Center for High Technology Materials was

associate professor of Physical Performance and Development in the College
of Education, has been elected to the Association for the Advancement
of Applied Sports Psychology College of Fellows. She is one of only

The UNM Foundation received more than $40 million in private funds
during the 2001-02 fiscal year to establish a new standard for private
giving to the University. The amount was 6.7 percent more than its
goal of $37.3 million and constitutes a 13.5 percent increase over
the previous fiscal year, which brought in a then-record $35.3 million.

- Jeffrey Norenberg,
assistant professor of radiopharmacy and chair of the radiopharmacy

Paul Roth, UNM School of Medicine dean and associate vice president
for Clinical Affairs for the UNM Health Sciences Center, was named
to the Council on Public Health Preparedness. The 21-member panel,

Tommy Thompson, will advise the department on appropriate actions

C. McNulty, a lecturer in the UNM Occupational Therapy Graduate Program,
received the Cordelia Meyers Writers Award from the American Occupational
Therapy Association. The award recognizes the best article by a first
time author in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy. The association

UNM School of Medicine and Cancer Center received a three-year, $1.12
million planning grant to become one of five major National Centers
of Excellence in Complex Biomedical Systems Research. Janet M. Oliver,
Regents' Professor of Pathology and associate director for research
in the UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center, leads the new center.
The goal of the centers is to encourage computational approaches that
will deepen understanding of biological processes. (8.21.02)

new officers have been elected to the UNM Health Sciences Center (HSC)
Clinical Operations Board for three-year terms. The officers are:
Paul Donisthorpe, chairman; Alberto Gutierrez, vice-chairman and Christina
Campos, secretary. The nine-member board oversees the non-research
and non-educational clinical operations of clinical facilities at

Dr.
Paul Roth, dean of the School of Medicine, was recently presented
with the 2002 Governor's Award for the New Mexico Emergency Medicine
System. Roth was one of the nation's first full professors of emergency

A. Pieper has been named dean for the College of Pharmacy. He is chair
of the Division of Pharmacotherapy in the School of Pharmacy at the
University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Pieper, who will assume
deanship on Oct. 1, replaces Dean William Hadley, who retired from

- The U.S. News
& World Report rankings placed the UNM School of Medicine in the top
15 primary care-oriented medical schools. It's the 13th consecutive
year the SOM has been ranked. Four additional programs in the School
of Medicine also cracked the top 10. The School of Law remains in the
top 100 (76th), and was identified as having one of the most racially
diverse student bodies in the country. The UNM Master of Fine Arts program
ranks 51st, while the photography program tied for second place. Also,

- Spring semester
enrollment at UNM is up 3.78 percent compared to last year, according
to the Official 2003 Spring Enrollment Report. As of the Feb. 7 census
date, 23,813 students were attending UNM's main campus, compared with
22,946 last spring, making it the largest spring enrollment total since
1999. Another notable increase came in the area of evening and weekend
enrollment with a spring credit hour increase of 11.7 percent or 5,548
additional credit hours, mostly upper-division and graduate, reported
