Faculty Senate holds final meeting
President-elect needed

By Carolyn Gonzales

Faculty Senate recently held their final meeting of the 1999-00 academic year. President William C. Gordon gave the president's report, first thanking faculty senators for their work as “one of the most productive working organizations at the University.” He indicated that Faculty Senate and Staff Council representatives will meet with him this summer to put together a legislative proposal about salaries and more.

Gordon expressed the need for a “real" strategic planning process to be led by Provost Brian Foster. “We need to have a strategic plan and do it right,” said Gordon.

Foster gave his first provost's report, noting that currently five high-level positions in Academic Affairs have searches underway. They include dean of Arts & Sciences, V.P. for Research, director of UNM Press, executive director of the Taos Center and registrar.

Foster discussed strategic planning saying, “A 'real' plan, an 'ambitious plan' should be in place in a year.”

Faculty Senate President John Geissman requested nominations for Senate president-elect -- none were offered -- and moved on to approve the Spring 2000 degree candidates.

Timing of UNM's spring break was on the agenda, with the senators voting to retain UNM's current spring break schedule.
