THREE NAMED TO RECEIVE UNM REGENTS' MEDALS
University of New Mexico will award the UNM Regents' Meritorious Service Medals
to Assistant to the President Marilyn A. Burrows and Associate Vice President
Emeritus for Research/Business and Government Relations Lee B. Zink and the
Regents' Recognition Medal to former Governor Bruce King at UNM's 2000 fall
commencement ceremonies, at 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 15, at University Arena ("The
Pit").
The Regents' Meritorious Service Medal is awarded to UNM faculty and staff
members to recognize extraordinary and distinguished service to the University
and the Regents' Recognition Medal is awarded to individuals other than faculty
or staff who have performed outstanding service to the institution.
Marilyn Burrows
Since 1981, Burrows has worked in the UNM Office of the President, serving
with six different UNM presidents-William Davis, John Perovich, Tom Farer, Gerald
May, Richard Peck and William C. Gordon. Her duties have extended from managing
calendars to managing the office. She has designed, prepared and issued invitations
to special functions, made travel arrangements, served on committees, provided
support and coordination for a variety of searches, handled the budget and accounting
for the President's Office and has hired, trained and supervised support staff.
Burrows has done whatever is needed to keep the office running smoothly, from
minor troubleshooting of office computers to running the carpet sweeper and
making coffee. She is currently working on the design and construction of an
office website.
During her tenure, she has listened to, advised, guided, directed, counseled,
consoled or otherwise assisted numerous individuals ranging from high-ranking
dignitaries to apprehensive freshmen students. But, she says, "The best
thing about working here is that I've had the opportunity of working with some
really wonderful people from a wide cross-section of the University community."
Before coming to UNM, Burrows held positions with the Department of Public
Works and the Domestic Relations Division, District Attorney's Office, County
of Sacramento, CA; with the New Mexico State University Office of the Dean of
Men and with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, White Sands Missile Range.
In the community, she has been active with the Girl Scouts of America, Campfire
Girls, Little League Baseball and the March of Dimes, among other organizations.
Burrows earned a Certificate in Secretarial Administration from NMSU and is
a graduate of Cobre High School, Bayard, NM.
She is married to UNM Associate Director of Housing John C. Burrows and they
have four adult children-three daughters and one son-and seven grandchildren.
Lee B. Zink
Zink has long been recognized as an authority on economic development issues
and research and government relations, among others, and his expertise has been
widely sought at the local, regional and national levels.
From 1968 to 1977, Zink served as director and principal research economist,
UNM Bureau of Business and Economic Research. Since 1975, he concurrently has
served as director of the UNM Institute for Applied Research Services. From
1978 to 1987, Zink was director of the National Energy and Information Center
Affiliate, U.S. Department of Energy and, in 1988, he was named as associate
vice president for Research/Business and Government Relations. From 1971 through
1999 he taught introductory economics to some 7,000 students.
Zink has held numerous concurrent responsibilities in the community over the
years. These include service with the Mayor's Kirtland Air Force Base Retention
Task Force; Better Business Bureau of New Mexico Board of Directors; Public
Forum Committee on Recycling; Governor's Business Advisory Council Executive
Committee; Albuquerque Economic Development Steering Committee; Albuquerque
Employment and Training Needs Task Force; UNICEF Advisory Council; First Security
Bank of New Mexico Board of Directors; University of Albuquerque Board of Trustees;
Economic Forum; New Mexico Jobs Task Force; U.S. Armed Forces Advisory Board;
Albuquerque Economic Development Advisory Committee; The Albuquerque Tribune
Board of Editorial Contributors; New Mexico Council on Economic Education; policy
advisor to
the Governor's Cabinet; Governor's Cabinet Secretary for Economic Development;
District Export Expansion Council of the U.S. Department of Commerce; President,
Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce; and, Chairman, Governor's Council of
Economic Advisors.
Among positions previously held by Zink were director, Technology Use Studies
Center, Southeastern State College, Durant, OK, 1965-68; assistant and associate
professor of Economics, Southeastern State College, Durant, OK, 1964-68; and,
research associate and project leader, Midwest Research Institute Project, Oklahoma
State University, 1962-64.
He served in the U.S. Army, 1951-53, and, in the U.S. Army Reserve, 1953-71.
Zink earned his bachelor's degree with honors in economics in 1959 from Indiana
University and his doctorate, also in economics, in 1967, from Oklahoma State
University. He is the recipient of a National Defense Education Act Fellowship,
1959-62, and was inducted by the Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa honorary organizations.
At UNM, Zink has been the recipient of several important and sometimes unique
grants and contracts and is the author or co-author of numerous publications.
He has an extensive record of community and University service and is a member
of several professional and honorary organizations. In 1984, he was named as
"Outstanding Educator at UNM" by the UNM Alumni Association.
He and his wife Patricia have two sons.
Governor Bruce King
Elected to serve a third term in 1990, Gov. King is the first person in New
Mexico's history as a state to be elected to three four-year terms.
King was first elected Governor in 1970 and served from 1971 through 1974.
Re-elected for a second term in 1978, he served through 1982.
King began his political career in 1959 when he was elected to the New Mexico
House of Representatives. He served five consecutive terms, three as Speaker
of the House. He served as State Democratic Chairman from 1968 through 1969
and as president of the State Constitutional Convention held in Santa Fe in
1969.
While Governor, King served as chairman of several boards and commissions,
including the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, the Rocky Mountain
Federation, the Four Corners Regional Commission, the Western Governors' Conference
and the Bi-national Governors' Commission of Mexico and the United States.
Some of his professional and civic affiliations include St. John's College
Board of Governors, Sunwest Financial Services Board of Directors, Greater Moriarity
Economic Development Association Board of Directors, the New Mexico Cattle Growers'
Association, the New Mexico Farm Bureau, the UNM Alumni Association, and the
Board of Directors of Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute.
King is a veteran of the U.S. Army, he was born in Stanley, NM, and is a graduate
of Stanley High School and attended UNM. As a lifelong resident of Stanley,
King is also a farmer and rancher and holds a partnership in King Brothers'
Ranch and King Butane Co.
He is married to the former Alice Martin of Moriarity and has two sons and four grandchildren.
