End of Semester Handprints(December 11, 2009)
If you have been to the Office of International Programs and Studies then you have seen the stairway hall of handprints. Come by OIPS one last night to leave your mark! International hand printing has become a tradition at the end of every school year and is a memorable time for everyone to gather and say their last goodbyes.
International Dance-Off at Coaches Grill (December 11, 2009)
Last but certainly not least of our events this year is the dance-off at Coaches Sports Grill. Once again, students are invited to bring music from their own countries and bust a move on the dance floor. Dancing events are always really popular. It’s a perfect time to be around a lot of the friends you’ve made in a familiar and comfortable environment just dancing the night away. A farewell dance is always a perfect way to end the semester.
River of Lights (December 4, 2009)
One of our last Social Hours for Fall 2009 was the River of Lights at the Bio Park. What better way to kick off the holiday season than to visit the infamous and beautiful River of Lights display? It’s sure to be cold but nothing bundles of friends, layers of clothes, and hot cocoa can’t take care of!
Pub Quiz & Karaoke (November 16, 2009)
What’s a Pub Quiz, you ask? Well, this year at Coaches we gathered teams of students to compete against each other in 8 rounds of trivia questions. After the prizes were given to the top three winning teams, everybody was able to celebrate with a little bit of karaoke fun!
Salsa & Guacamole Demonstration (October 29, 2009)
One of the zestiest things about New Mexican culture is obvious – the food! OIPS and the Student Activities Center teamed up to give the international students a true taste of New Mexico – literally! We got a chef to teach authentic New Mexican recipes, mostly different types of salsa, and provide students with recipe cards and the history behind them. The students had fun and will be able to show everyone back home how hot New Mexico can be!
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (October 9, 2009)
Before the sign-up sheets could even be printed people were coming in asking about the Balloon Fiesta! As you well know, the Balloon Fiesta is kind of a big deal around here. So of course, Internationals were more than excited to experience it for themselves. The Special Shapes Balloon Glow was a perfect opportunity for the internationals to really get an idea of how spectacular the Fiesta really is!
Outdoor Movie & Barbecue (October 2, 2009)
Thanks to Susi, one of our wonderful International Advisors here at OIPS, we were able to create a wonderful social hour at her house. Hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, and more were on the barbeque menu while a big projected movie was displayed on the outside wall.
UNM vs. NMSU Tailgate (September 26, 2009)
Students from all around the world should know that there’s a lot more to American Football than just the sport. A huge part of the game is the tailgate! Tailgating is a great and fun way to get a ton of people together to eat and celebrate the biggest game of the season! We had a great selection of food, games, and even face-paint to show our Lobo Spirit!
New Mexico State Fair (September 11, 2009)
If you’re from NM then you know that State Fair time is something to get excited for. With over 50 international students who signed up for tickets and even more who came along for the ride anway, the state fair proved to be an entertaining event. Whether you were there for the rides or art exhibits, shopping or just the food, the internationals had tons of fun even though we got soaked from rain!
Johnson Field Sports & Activities (August 27, 2009)
Combine the Johnson Field, volleyball, soccer, horse shoes, tug-a-war, and Subway sandwiches and you have a great outdoor event! There were even a few rounds of good ol’ duck-duck-goose! Over 100 International students came to enjoy some fun in the sun that day.
Welcome to UNM and New Mexico - Salsa Dancing (August 20, 2009)
The first social hour of the fall semester welcomed over 120 new international students to UNM from over 30 different countries all over the world! New Mexico’s vibrant Hispanic culture was the template for our first social hour! Students from every continent enjoyed a professional Salsa lesson and performance, and then practiced their new moves as they danced the night away!
