The International Social Hour is a bi-weekly get-together sponsored by the OIPS office that invites international students to meet one another, as well as American students, in a fun atmosphere. These events provide new cultural experiences as well as an enjoyable release from the pressures of classes and living in a different country.
Our activities range from sports tournaments to salsa dancing lessons to local festivals such as the Balloon Fiesta. The Social Hour is held at various places on or off campus, and free refreshments, such as pizza, sandwiches, or New Mexican food, are provided to the participants. Students are quite eager to participate, with about 40-50 students consistently in attendance, and upwards of 150 at our larger-scale events.
Our Social Hour schedule is widely distributed to all international students by such means as flyers, classroom announcements, an e-mail listserv, Social Hour Gmail calendar, and Facebook events. This information is also available to American students interested in studying abroad, international fields of study, languages, or cultural exchange.
