University Honors Program
Students
with high academic qualifications and strong motivation are
eligible to participate in the University Honors Program,
a University-wide program offering special academic opportunities
to students from all undergraduate colleges. The program is
a charter member of the National Collegiate Honors Council,
a national organization representing more than 650 institutions
in the United States.
The University Honors Program provides an opportunity to
gain a distinct career advantage by earning an honors notation
(cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude) on the baccalaureate
degree, but more importantly, the honors program offers the
chance to explore major contemporary ideas and values in small
interdisciplinary seminars. Seminars offered in recent years
include: Freshman Core Seminars; the Ancient Medieval Legacy and the
Modern Legacy; Science and Revolution; Health, Law and Ethics;
Natural History of Creativity; The Nature of Cities; and The
Creative Process: Writing.
The Honors seminars emphasize close and reflective reading,
accurate writing, active listening, and discussions in which
reasoned self-expression is valued and rewarded. The University
Honors Program also offers personal attention from interested
faculty members and contact with students from different academic
backgrounds and widely varied interests.
The University Honors Program is not a degree program, so
students must get their degrees from one of UNM's traditional
colleges. If students fulfill the requirements of the program,
then the Honors Council will confer an Honors distinction
to their diploma and transcript. This designation can be valuable
when applying to graduate or professional schools, or when
seeking employment.
Students may take Honors seminars as electives or substitute
them for certain group requirements with permission from their
college or school. Hence, a student does not need to take
extra classes to graduate with an Honors distinction. Honors
seminars afford students an opportunity to supplement course
work with an interdisciplinary study of a wide range of topics.
The seminars enhance analytical thinking and encourage the
interchange of ideas between students of a variety of disciplines.
Pressure for letter grades is greatly reduced by the special
grading system (A, CRCredit, NCNo Credit).
Shared Learning
The University of New Mexico offers many specialized programs
aimed at helping people reach their educational goals while
attaining a high standard of personal achievement. For almost
thirty years the University Honors Program has involved students
in the excitement of shared learning. It does this by providing
small seminars in an intimate atmosphere with professors who
are skilled in nurturing and maximizing student-initiated
inquiry. The program is committed to encouraging students
to explore ideas and questions central to gaining an understanding
of the modern world.
