Application Requirements at the University of New Mexico

Beginning Freshmen

Required Credentials

  1. Completed Application
  2. $20 non-refundable application fee
  3. Official high school transcript with rank-in-class (and courses in progress if you have not yet graduated); or official GED scores.
  4. Official ACT or SAT scores. Scores must be submitted directly from:

Admission Requirements

UNM admits freshmen from regionally accredited high schools to bachelor degree programs under one of three sets of criteria:

1. Minimum of a 2.25 average or better on a 4.00 scale for all high school courses plus completion of the following 13 specific college preparatory units (two semesters equal one unit ) with at least a 2.25 average:

  • 4 English, one of which must be 11th or 12th grade composition;
  • 3 Math, including algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, or higher mathematics;
  • 2 Social Science, one of which must be U.S. history;
  • 2 Natural Science, one of which must be a laboratory science in biology, chemistry or physics; and
  • 2 Foreign Language, both of which must be the same language other than English, or evidence of proficiency in a second language.

3. A limited "Special Admissions" category: Students who do not qualify for admission under criteria 1 or 2 may request "special consideration " through an appeal process. A combination of quantitative and subjective factors are used in making these admission decisions.

Non-Traditional Curriculum Applicants

GED applicants should submit the following:

  1. Completed application.
  2. $20 non-refundable application fee.
  3. Official GED scores.
  4. Official ACT or SAT scores.

Home-School or Non-Accredited Schools

The University provides options for admission for those students (minimum age 16) who have been home-schooled or attended non-accredited high schools. All applicants must submit official ACT or SAT scores.

Students who have attended a non-accredited high school or home school may apply either under the GED option (see above) or may apply under Criterion I (see beginning freshmen admission requirements above).

Transfer Students

Required Credentials

  1. Completed application.
  2. $20 non-refundable application fee.
  3. Official transcripts from all colleges attended.

If you have fewer than 26 transferable hours, you are considered a transferring freshman. You must, therefore, submit high school credentials and also meet freshman admission requirements.

Admission Requirements

The minimum requirement for admission to UNM is a "C" average (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) in all transferable college work attempted. Individual colleges or programs may require a higher average for acceptance of transfers. Check the UNM Catalog for specific requirements.

Readmits

If you were previously enrolled as an undergraduate at UNM, just submit a completed application. The application fee for readmits is $5 for non-degree, and $15 for degree-seeking students.

If you attended another college since you were last enrolled at UNM, you must submit official transcripts from each institution.

Note: If you were enrolled within the last three sessions, an application for readmission is not required.

Non-Degree Status

Required Credentials for Non-Degree Students

  1. Completed application.
  2. $10 non-refundable application fee.

Note: Students in Non-Degree status are not eligible to receive financial aid.

To be eligible to enroll in Non-Degree Status at UNM, a student must meet one of these requirements

Admission Requirements

  1. Be at least 21 years old; or
  2. Be a graduate of an accredited high school or its equivalent and have been out of high school at least one year.

You may not enroll in Non-Degree status if:

  1. You are currently under suspension from UNM or any other institution;
  2. You were previously an undergraduate student at UNM and have not completed a bachelor's degree;
  3. You are in the United States on a student visa; or
  4. You have been refused admission to degree status.

Applications and Fees

Applications and fees are applicable for three consecutive sessions. If you do not register for the session requested on your application and wish to postpone enrollment to enrollment to a subsequent semester, you must notify the Office of Admissions. If you do not enroll within that time period, a new application and fee are required.

Social Security Numbers

The University of New Mexico uses students' social security numbers as identification at the University. The number is used for record-keeping and statistical purposes only and is not disclosed to other parties for any purpose without written authorization of the student. The authority to use the social security number comes from the Board of Regents and was adopted on March 24, 1967.

Family Education Rights and Privacy Act Directory Information, including name, address, and telephone listing may be released without written consent unless the student has requested that such directory information be withheld.
