You will find a number of programs and people at UNM whose primary purpose is ensuring your academic success. We provide a number of support programs to guide and enrich your education. From providing academic counseling to giving you the tools and technology you need to succeed, you'll find that the people at UNM are dedicated toward helping you attain your goals.

Center for Academic Program Support

One of the most difficult challenges college students must face throughout their educational careers is the intensified course work that comes with an increasingly demanding curriculum. Whether a student is a freshman beginning an academic career or an undergraduate facing particularly difficult classes, the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) provides needed assistance. Free tutoring is available through CAPS in undergraduate subject areas, as well as free workshops in improving study skills. Whether a student needs individual tutoring, a study group, a workshop, the Writing Lab, or assistance from a Learning Disabilities Specialist, the center has a service to meet that need. For more information, call (505) 277-7208.

College Enrichment Program

The College Enrichment Program provides guidance and counseling support to economically disadvantaged students in all areas relevant to their eventual success on campus, including overall academic advising, career selection and financial aid advisement. Particular emphasis is given to assisting students from backgrounds which are currently under-represented at the University. For more information, call (505) 277-5321.

Computer and Information Resources and Technology

Research has shown that college students who use computers get better grades. At UNM, students have free access to all nine conveniently located computing facilities on campus. Students can prepare papers that integrate text and graphics, perform statistical analyses, draw architectural designs, write computer programs and communicate with students around the world.

University Honors Program

The University Honors Program offers stimulating interdisciplinary courses in small, seminar-type settings. These seminars, open to all qualified students, provide opportunities for self-expression and close interaction with faculty members and other students. As with all University honors, participants have the opportunity to gain an honors notation (cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude) on their baccalaureate degrees. For more information, call (505) 277-4211.

Departmental Honors

Many academic departments have their own honors programs, allowing students to graduate with departmental honors and thus gain further recognition.

Evening and Weekend Programs

Because increasing numbers of returning adult and other nontraditional students have families and full-time jobs, UNM has an extensive schedule of late afternoon and evening classes. A number of programs permit students to complete degrees entirely through evening classes, and many undergraduate required courses are offered on weekends as well. For more information, call (505) 277-0896.

Libraries

UNM's collection of books totaled more than two million volumes in six libraries in 1997, making the UNM library system not only the largest in New Mexico but also one of the most important research resources in the Southwest. In addition to a general library, separate library facilities are provided for business and economics, fine arts and architecture, law, medicine, and science and engineering. The UNM library system was recently ranked 49th among all North American university libraries by the prestigious Association of Research Libraries.

Study Abroad

Undergraduate students may apply to study at a university in another country. Students eligible for financial aid may be able to apply benefits to study abroad programs. You will pay UNM tuition and earn UNM credit toward your degree for the experience overseas.

Over 600 foreign students attend UNM each year and a large number of UNM scholars go abroad to participate in academic programs overseas. On campus, the International Center serves as a gathering place for foreign and American students and promotes international education through cultural and social events.
