Transfer Credit Requirements

Students transferring to UNM receive full credit for course work completed with a minimum grade of "C" from regionally accredited institutions provided UNM has equivalent programs of study. (Transferable courses with grades of "D" from New Mexico institutions are accepted.) UNM does not accept classes that are technical/vocational or remedial in nature, or are dogmatic religion courses. The University also does not award credit for work or life experience, or credit earned through a cooperative education program. UNM operates on a semester credit calendar. Therefore, classes from quarter system institutions will be recalculated to semester hours (one quarter hour = .66 semester hour).

Evaluation of Credit

The evaluation of your transfer credit is part of the admission application procedure. It is a two-step process:

  1. An Admissions Officer will evaluate your credits on a course-by-course basis to determine general transferability to the University. A transfer credit evaluation (TCE) is then produced and mailed to you.
  2. You may also view your TCE online through LoboWeb. Your college advisor will determine how your transferred credits will apply toward your stated degree program.

Applications and Fees

Applications and fees are applicable for four consecutive semesters. If you do not register for the semester requested on your application and wish to postpone enrollment to a future semester, you must notify the Office of Admissions. If you do not enroll within that time period, a new application and fee are required.

Social Security Numbers

Your Social Security Number will not be the primary University identification number. It will not appear on your UNM Lobo indentification card. UNM is required to collect your SSN in order to provide full access to services such as financial aid, to ensure an accurate academic record, and for record-keeping purposes. The University will protect the confidentiality of your SSN as required by law. If you are unable to provide a Social Security Number, the University will assign an alternative number to you. This will not impact the admission decision.
