Tournament History
PSP Golf Tournament to Celebrate 25th Year
For radio deejay Larry Ahrens, involvement with the Presidential
Scholarship Program started as a promotional stunt. When the UNM
presidency was suddenly left vacant in 1982, Ahrens began campaigning
for the position. Presumably interested in the job for its attendant
perks (good seats at the Pit and an impressive campus residence),
his slogan became "Send Larry to the Big House."
After a few
months of campaigning, Larry ended it all with a victory party
at a local hotel. Guests were charged $10 and the proceeds benefited
the Presidential Scholarship Program. All involved agreed that
the event should become an annual one. The second year the party
became a golf tournament, raising $12,000 with 65 golfers.

tournament since 1994. |
Over the past 22 years the tournament
has raised more than $900,000, and provides at least 40 full Presidential
Scholarships each year.
The 2004 event netted $77,000
in funds for Presidential Scholarships. The tournament is the
single biggest one-day fund-raiser at UNM. And, it's fun! Sign
