The UNM Board of Regents is composed of seven members who are appointed by the Governor of New Mexico with the consent of the Senate, for staggered terms of six years except for the student regent who is appointed for a two-year term.
The Board’s power to govern the University includes fiduciary responsibility for the assets and programs of the University, establishment of goals and policies to guide the University and oversight of the functioning of the University. The Board vests responsibility for the operation and management of the University in the President of the University.

James H. Koch, board president, is president of Daniels Insurance in Santa Fe. A former legislator, Koch was the original author of the Inspection of Records Act, the New Mexico equivalent of the national Freedom of Information Act that protects the rights of all people to access public information and records. Koch has continued to remain active at the highest levels of New Mexico, serving as state chair of the Democratic Party in 2002 and as a key advisor to current and former Governors for four decades. He received his bachelor's degree in education from UNM in 1959. He was appointed to the board in January 2003. |

Jack L. Fortner, vice president of the board, is an attorney in Farmington, NM, where he has served as San Juan County Commissioner and an alternate municipal judge. He received his bachelor's in political science from UNM and his juris doctor from University of Michigan. Fortner has been a regent since 1999 |

Carolyn J. Abeita is a partner in the Van Amberg, Rogers, Yepa & Abeita law firm in Albuquerque. The firm specializes in Indian law matters and tribal representation and Ms. Abeita is a New Mexico Board Certified Specialist in Federal Indian Law. Abeita received her bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 1984 and she is a 1988 graduate of the UNM School of Law. She has served on the Board of Directors of Equal Access to Justice and is a former Court of Appeals Judge for the Pasqua Yaqui Tribe. She is an Isleta Pueblo tribal member. Abeita currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer to the Board of Regents. |

Don L. Chalmers owns auto dealerships in Rio Rancho, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. A member of numerous boards and commissions, Chalmers has served on the UNM Hospital Clinical Operations Board and the UNM Foundation. He also served on the NM Commission on Higher Education. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's degree in marketing. He was appointed to the board in December 2005.

John "Mel" M. Eaves is currently president and shareholder in the law firm of Eaves & Mendenhall, P.A. Eaves served in the NM House of Representatives as chair of the House Labor Committee and as a member of Appropriations and Finance, Ways and Means and Audit. He is a former member of the NM Board of Educational Finance and Commission on Post-Secondary Education. Eaves received his bachelor's and juris doctor degrees from UNM. He was appointed to the board in 2003. |

Raymond G. Sanchez, an attorney and small business owner, served as Speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives and was a champion for higher education during an historic 16-year tenure. His knowledge of the complex issues and needs of every corner of the state has proven invaluable to the University. He has a bachelor's degree in government and a juris doctor degree from UNM. Sanchez was appointed to the board in February 2005. |

Dahlia R. Dorman is the student regent named by Gov. Bill Richardson in December 2006. Dorman graduated in May 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish and is now a student at the UNM School of Law. As an undergraduate she was very active with her sorority Pi Beta Phi, ASUNM student government and the Black Student Union. She volunteers her time as a judge for the U.S. Figure Skating Association where she judges local test sessions. |
