STAIF ExhibitSTAIF, a major international technical forum now hosting six concurrent conferences, is organized by the University of New Mexico's Institute for Space and Nuclear Power Studies (UNM-ISNPS). This annual meeting seeks to promote the exchange of information among technologists, academicians, industrialists, and program managers on technical and programmatic issues related to inexpensive access to space and space commercialization, exploration, and the potential for performing scientific research and developing new technologies. Among its organizers, conference and session chairs, and attendees, are high-level representatives from industry, government agencies, and institutes of higher learning from around the world. Numerous professional engineering societies also co-sponsor the event.

20th Space Design Competition and
High School Special Session

The theme for the 20th Annual Space Design Competition, to be held February 11, 2008, in Albuquerque, NM, is Orbital Colony. Project guidelines and application forms are available on the 2008 SDC Page.

STAIF Organizers Choose Theme for 2008

As STAIF organizers look toward the 25th anniversary of the Symposium on Space Nuclear Power and Propulsion, the drive towards...

Enabling Space Exploration

...remains crucial to this annual meeting's primary mission, and thus provides the overall theme for each conference under the STAIF umbrella in 2008. In order for STAIF and members of the space technology field to succeed in enabling space exploration, it is important to reinforce exploration's benefits to society and the future, which leads to the title for Plenary I, "Why Space Exploration?"

Just as important, as the "why," is the 'how." How will we establish permanent bases on the Moon and Mars? How do we address the physical and monetary challenges posed by such missions? "Making Exploration Affordable" provides the theme for Plenary II, and the focus of presentations by the speakers who will be invited to speak during STAIF's opening morning activities.

In 2008, STAIF will host the following conferences and symposia:

Plus, new for 2008, is the addition of a sixth symposium, an outgrowth of the 6th Conference on Space Colonization. Please check back with us later this spring for more information on this new symposium.

Student Assistant Program to Return for 2008

In 2007, meeting organizers launched a student assistant program intended to facilitate undergraduate and graduate student attendance at STAIF. Sponsoring organizations would meet the travel and hotel needs of selected students from colleges and universities across the U.S., while STAIF's organizers would sponsor their registration to the meeting, in exchange for assistance provided by the students during the technical sessions. With the successful participation of twenty students during 2007, STAIF will renew the program for 2008. If yours is an organization interested in sponsoring a student, or you are a student interested in being matched with a sponsor, please contact The Institute for Space and Nuclear Power Studies at isnps@unm.edu.

Whether you participate to inspire or be inspired, we invite you to explore the Space Technology and Applications International Forum website, its conferences, call for papers, and program areas.

Here's to 2008 and beyond!
