Kata hosh Chahta? (Who is Choctaw?): Identity and Belonging in Mississippi”
Sean E. Gantt
Sean Gantt will discuss current research with the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (MBCI) and will focus on contemporary Native American identity issues, highlighting the importance of indigenous language as an identity marker. Hi will address these questions: What forms of knowledge about identity and belonging are imbedded within local Choctaw communities? Who counts as Choctaw and what factors influence inclusion or exclusion from a Choctaw identity? Choctaw strategic forms of cultural adaptation and identity negotiations will be discussed. This paper seeks to explore the ways that community members negotiate multiple identity positions within an ever-changing landscape.
