“Early Farming and the Fate of Archaic Hunter-Gatherers in the Albuquerque Basin”
Jim Railey discusses co-existence of mobile hunter-gatherers and early farmers during the Late Archaic period.
In recent decades, there has been an intensive flurry of archaeological excavations in the Albuquerque area, and the results have shed considerable new light on developments during the Archaic time frame. Much of this work has occurred on Albuquerque’s West Mesa, where hundreds of radiocarbon dates reveal a long-term trend featuring 1) little or no occupation during the Early Archaic period, 2) gradually increasing occupation and use during the Middle Archaic period, 3) a prehistoric occupation peak in the early Late Archaic, 4) a gradual decline in use of the West Mesa during the later Late Archaic, and 5) apparent abandonment of the mesa in the wake of a devastating drought at the end of the Late Archaic period. Despite the processing of scores, if not hundreds, of flotation samples from excavated sites on the West Mesa, no maize or other cultigens have been found pre-ceramic contexts.
In contrast, maize remains have been identified from at least seven Late Archaic sites in the surrounding river valleys, despite the fact that far fewer excavations have occurred here as on the West Mesa, and radiocarbon dates suggest substantial population growth in the river valleys during the Late Archaic period. Taken together, the evidence tells a story of climate change, boom and bust for hunter-gatherers in the area, possible co-existence of mobile hunter-gatherers and early farmers during the Late Archaic period, and the pre-ceramic foundations of Pueblo culture in the Albuquerque area.
