Past AnnouncementsGordon Graduate Research Seminar Call for PapersGreetings! We are pleased to announce the addition of a Graduate Research Seminar to coincide with the GRC-Metabolic Basis of Ecology conference in 2008. This program brings together graduate students and post-docs from diverse backgrounds in a relaxed setting prior (July 5th - 6th) to the start of the main GRC (July 6th - 11th). We invite 200-word abstracts for participation. Please E-mail abstracts to both: Puni Jeyasingh and Charles Price. Abstracts submitted by April 1st 2008 will be considered for one of ten speaker slots. Graduate students and post-docs please mark your calendars. Senior scientists kindly apprise your group about this unique opportunity. For more information go to: 2008 Program (Graduate Research Seminar: Matabolic Theory of Ecology) Kindly post/forward this flyer as you see fit. Sincerely, Puni Jeyasingh & Chuck Price. HHMII Scholar Paul Hooper has just been published! The first Science and Society Public Lecture for the spring semester: Sun Light in Atmospheric Chemistry and Climateby Veronica Vaida, Professor of Chemistry, University of Colorado 5p.m. (2/14) @ University of New Mexico Conference Center, Rm G Sunlight drives atmospheric chemistry and controls Earths temperature and climate. The photon flux is controlled by solar emission modulated by absorption by atmospheric gases, aerosols and clouds. The factors determining the characteristics of sunlight at a given altitude will be discussed to explain its effectiveness in driving processes relevant to climate. Sunlight initiated reactions of organic species in aqueous environments will be used to illustrate the basic chemistry driving the reactivity of the atmosphere in determining the temperature of the planet. The discussion will point to known and well understood facts as well as to fundamental processes not yet completely understood. The purpose of the GRD Fund is to promote graduate and professional level research projects that have a direct impact on New Mexico’s communities. In the past years the funding process proved to be a huge success, with Currently, two types of grants are available to apply for: High Priority Penny Gilbert General Application Instructions for the GRD Fund 12:00 noon on Friday, November 9, 2007 To: Mailing Address

Date: 29th August 2007 HHMI Interfaces Scholars at the University of New Mexico, PiBBsThis month Maryrose Franko, Senior Program Officer for Graduate Science Education at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI; Chevy Chase, MD, USA) has initiated a new title for those that have been awarded fellowships through the HHMI-NIH Interfaces initiative. Our scholars, who were in the past called PiBBs Fellows will now be called HHMI Interfaces Scholars at the University of New Mexico. This new title is meant to increase the prestige and national recognition of our scholars. HHMI Interfaces Scholars are based out of only 10 institutions that were awarded grants from a competition of 136 other institutions. These awardees, along with the University of New Mexico, are, Brandies; Carnegie Mellon University partnered with the University of Pittsburg; Johns Hopkins University; The New Jersey Institute of Technology partnered with Rutgers-Newark and the University of Medicine and Dentistry if New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School; The University of California, Irvine; University of San Diego; University of California, San Francisco; University of Chicago; and finally, the University of Pennsylvania. Since the start of the program, PiBBs has sponsored nine HHMI Interfaces Scholar and although most of HHMI Interfaces Programs have begun supporting scholars on their own campuses, there are still fewer than 100 HHMI Interfaces Scholars nationwide. The results are that HHMI Interfaces Scholars at the University of New Mexico, PiBBs, find themselves in very select company. They are among the vanguard of scientists being trained with an Interdisciplinary approach to 21st century science. HHMI Interfaces Scholars at the University of New Mexico are currently being recruited from Biology, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, Mathematics and Statistics and from Anthropology. PiBBs, the Program in Interdisciplinary Biological and Biomedical Sciences is charged by HHMI to produce a "cadre of scientists with the knowledge and skills to conduct research at the interface between the biomedical, physical, and computational sciences." http://www.hhmi.org/news/112205.html We here at PiBBs think we've so far been very successful at doing just that. Date:July 31st, 2007 The UNM IGERT on Integrating Nanotechnology with Cell Biology and Neuroscience (INCBN) celebrates the first anniversary!1st Annual Symposium on Integrating Nanotechnology with Cell Biology and Neuroscience, to be held on August 15, 2007 at the Science and Technology Park, 801 University Blvd. SE. The objective of the Symposium is to provide a widely interdisciplinary forum for New Mexico practicing clinicians, biomedical scientists, development engineers, physicists, and chemists specializing in different fields to benefit from each other's knowledge and to stimulate new collaborations requiring their complementary expertise. We’ve put together an excellent line up of speakers from UNM, Sandia National Laboratories, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Join us for a full day of presentations, a catered lunch, and end the day networking and viewing poster presentations by our INCBN IGERT Fellows, while enjoying beer/wine and hors d’ oeuvres! The symposium is free of charge; however, we do need attendees to register for food and beverage counts, and to stay within the room capacity. On-line registration and more information about the program can be found at http://sincbn.chtm.unm.edu/. Attendance is limited to 125 persons, so register early!
