Student Enrichment Opportunity

The Program in Interdisciplinary Biological and Biomedical Sciences (PiBBs) has set aside funds specifically designed to enhance opportunities for graduate students to engage in interdisciplinary biological science.  Proposals for these funds would generally fall under one of the following categories:

• enrollment in an intense workshop or summer school providing specialized training in an area not currently well represented at UNM.
• spending an extended period of time working in the laboratory of a scientist with specialized expertise not well represented at UNM.
• attending a professional meeting geared towards interdisciplinary biological science and/or in a discipline other than the primary affiliation of the student.
• purchasing specialized equipment relevant to their degree and which enhances the interdisciplinary nature of their dissertation.

Eligibility:  Any graduate student in good standing that has enrolled in a PiBBs core course over the previous two years.

Target Deadlines:  for full consideration, complete applications will be reviewed in December and/or April of each year. Successful applicants will be notified in early January/May; students will be expected to provide a one-page synopsis of what the funds were used for and whether they were successful in enhancing their ability to engage in interdisciplinary biological research.

Application process:  submit either electronically or via mail a  completed cover application form ( .doc/ .pdf), a 1-2 page proposal addressing the relevance of the proposed activity to the students dissertation and how this activity will enhance their ability to engage in interdisciplinary science, and a letter of recommendation from the major advisor.

Evaluation:  applications will be evaluated in terms of the quality of the research proposed as well as its interdisciplinary nature.  Preference may be given to those students who have actively participated in PiBBs activities.  Decisions will be made by the PiBBs leadership team, which includes representation by all participating departments.
