My work has always found its form in the struggle between an intuitive, exuberant picture making and the strict architecture of late modernist sensibilities. The geometry and mechanics of assembling line, shape, edge, space, surface, and color are constantly jostled by the urgency to animate. Any configuration can be brought to life by two adjacent circles (eyes) or by long parallel shapes (legs, arms). Biological symmetry is so insistent that evolution, history, and personality soon emerge -- and inevitably prevail. I may fashion these images, but I don't meet them until we're done.
Storey's work is included in the public collections of the Helsinki City Art Museum, Finland, the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Baltimore Museum of Art, Arkansas Art Center, Fogg Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, and the New York Public Library Print Collection. Exhibitions within the past five years that have included Storey's work have been at the Noyes Museum and the Montclair Museum in New Jersey, the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock, and the Morris-Healy Gallery, Paul Morris Gallery, and Betsy Senior Gallery in New York.
