Teachers' Institute seminars provide opportunities for classroom teachers to develop their content knowledge by working closely with faculty and teacher colleagues in a setting that encourages inquiry, reflection, and sharing of knowledge.

How it Works
  • Teachers work together with an A&S faculty member to examine a topic in a seminar-style setting. Teachers and faculty members share their expertise in content and pedagogy.
  • Participating teachers create challenging curriculum units tailored to their needs and the needs of their students.
  • All K-12 classroom teachers are eligible.
  • Seminars meet about 3 times a week over 3-4 weeks for a total of 40 hours.
  • Meetings are usually held on campus, but many seminars include field trips to sites in the Albuquerque area.
  • All participants receive books and resource materials free.

Participants interested in graduate credit may register for three hours in the seminar leader's discipline, paying the usual UNM tuition rate. The current tuition rate can be found at http://www.unm.edu/~bursar/

What teachers are saying about the Teachers' Institute program:

"I  found the reading materials and field trips thought provoking and stimulating.  The opportunity to delve deeply into these areas gave me an "intellectual high" as well as greater confidence in my ability to comment on these matters with authority."

"My students will be energized, as I have been, by the curriculum I am writing.  I have seen new ways to connect traditional subject matter tonew strategies.  I am thrilled to have access to so many good minds and good lessons from others in the ATI"

"I feel renewed... I want to give my students so much more than just book-work; I want to see them have an understanding.  The seminar has given me courage to experiment with the curriculum; to be innovative and have the reasons why."
