Innovate ABQ

Innovate ABQ is a UNM economic revitalization/jobs creation initiative located in Downtown Albuquerque.  Launched in 2013, it is supported by local businesses and governmental entities including the City of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, the State of New Mexico and the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union.   UNM is purchasing a seven-acre site at the corner of Central and Broadway to house Innovate ABQ.   Described as an example of the  ‘live, learn, work, play’ concept, this approach to urban planning supports mixed-used real estate projects and districts that can help revitalize communities by focusing on main streets and university districts.

Master planning is underway, and the site will be developed primarily with private funds.  When finished it will provide expanded capacity for STC.UNM startups that flow from licensing UNM discoveries to the private sector for commercialization.

From its inception, Innovate ABQ envisioned the active involvement of UNM faculty and staff.   In addition to providing more space for STC.UNM’s tech transfer role, it will also provide more opportunities and space for incubating businesses launched by UNM faculty and student entrepreneurs.   For example, the Anderson School of Management has an Entrepreneurship program on the main campus, but dedicated space and financial support for directly incubating student business concepts is lacking.
