Jennifer Gomez-Chavez grew up in Hagerman, NM, and is a high school graduate from Artesia, NM. Jennifer has 22 yrs experience working with low-income, and students from underrepresented backgrounds through her positions with the LULAC National Educational Service Center and the University of New Mexico. She has a B.A. Criminal Justice, a Master’s in counseling, and is presently a doctorial student in the UNM Educational Leadership program. Two years ago, she was assigned to lead the UNM Graduation Express program by the Provost office, which is a new program to focus on increasing graduation rates for the entire campus. Ms. Gomez-Chavez’s experience includes academic advisement, retention initiatives, orientation development and implementation, mentor/tutor training, faculty/student mediation, departmental management, and staff development. She has also serves on UNM committees such as: Provost Committee on Advisement, LOBOS for Legislation -UNM Alumni Association, Mentoring Institute Advisory Committee, the Graduation Task Force Student Engagement Committee (Chair), Alliance for Hispanic Serving Institution Educators, and Lumina Unidos Planning Committee.
Jennifer has spent a lifetime focused on student retention and success, and continues to dedicate her career to create better opportunities for students to have access to college, connect to critical resources, and offer support programs that help guide students to complete their degrees. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano, and dances with the New Mexico Ballet Company and the Festival Ballet Company in their annual Nutcracker Ballet and Dracula. She is married and has two children, Derek – eight years old, and Monique – thirteen years old.
