Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Personnel

The major work of this office is to build faculty strength and to respond to individual faculty and administrative personnel requests for support and guidance. Its goals are quite simply to improve the UNM faculty experience by initiating new activities that reinforce and strengthen the work of existing faculty, and ensure recruitment of the best possible candidates in future hiring and retention initiatives.

Reporting to the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and serving as a member of the Provost's Cabinet, the Associate Provost for Academic Personnel is responsible for:

  • providing oversight and guidance for academic personnel administration and ensuring consistency across disciplines given the varying context that exists in main campus schools, colleges and branch campuses.
  • participating in assessment and award of faculty benefits such as leaves, supplemental salary components, and equity awards.
  • providing oversight and direction to the Faculty Contracts and Services Office (FCSO).
  • assisting in resolution of faculty grievances and in monitoring of investigations of complaints.
  • providing oversight of the Ombuds/Dispute Resolution Services and Counseling Assistance and Resource Services (CARS) departments.
  • coordinating Academic Affairs’ faculty recruitment and retention efforts including support of recruitment, hiring and appointment of diverse and innovative faculty, retention and advancement of academic personnel, and upholding University standards of ethics, integrity and compliance with institutional policy and regulations.
  • developing and supporting initiatives which include addressing equity issues for academic personnel, interdisciplinary appointments, and increasing under-represented groups in key disciplines.
  • serving on the Faculty Senate Policy Committee in an ad hoc capacity and participating in the development of new policies and procedures that impact academic personnel including those pertaining to hiring, ranks and titles, and the award of Faculty Handbook benefits.

Carol A. Parker

Associate Provost of Academic Personnel

Carol A. Parker ImageCarol A. Parker became Associate Provost for Academic Affairs in September 2013. Parker holds the rank of Professor of Law at the UNM School of Law; has faculty government experience and a broad understanding of the concepts and processes of shared governance; a record of working to develop policies to improve the UNM experience for faculty, students and staff; and nearly a decade of higher education administrative experience at UNM including academic personnel administration and human resources management. This work together with broad administrative experience in other areas including budgeting, finance, information technology, academic publishing and libraries provides her with extensive knowledge of UNM academic policies and procedures, as well as UNM administrative and business policies and procedures.

 Parker’s higher education administrative experience was enhanced by a year spent as a Fellow of the American Council on Education (2012-2013) in a leadership development program that included an extended placement in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost at Arizona State University. As an ACE Fellow Parker visited more than two dozen college campuses, foundations, state agencies and non-profits around the country; worked on special projects for the UNM Office of the President; and examined a wide range of topics relevant to large public universities engaged in very high levels of research. Her Fellowship studies included strategic planning; fundraising; institutional research and predictive analytics; educational innovations such as competency-based education, online degree programs and adaptive learning technology; enrollment management strategies; e-advising systems; the research mission; technology transfer and economic development; diversity; globalization; and athletics.

She is a recipient of UNM Law’s Keleher & McLeod Professorship in recognition of her teaching, scholarship and service (2008-2010). She often serves as an accreditation site inspector for the American Bar Association’s Section on Legal Education Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. She is licensed to practice law in Michigan and worked as a research attorney at the Michigan Court of Appeals.

Parker received a J.D. degree in law from the Wayne State University Law School. In addition she holds a B.A. degree, cum laude, in humanities (College of Arts and Letters) from Michigan State University’s Honor’s College; and a M.S.I degree in information science (School of Information) from The University of Michigan, Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
