OSET provides instructional-development support to main-campus faculty and teaching assistants through offerings of workshops, brown-bag discussions, course-design institutes and the annual Success in the Classroom: Sharing Practices that Work conference. The office also provides logistical support to initiatives of the Faculty Senate Teaching Enhancement Committee.

Gary Smith is Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences and founding Director of the Office of Support for Effective Teaching. Smith has been at UNM since 1987 and has been with OSET since 2006. His geoscience research has involved a variety of projects at the interface of sedimentology with volcanology, regional tectonics, and hydrology. He also conducts research on how students learn geologic concepts, assessment of learning in the geosciences, and inquiry-based instruction. Along with Aurora Pun, he is the author of How Does Earth Work?, an introductory college geology textbook. Smith is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and an Honorary Lifetime Member of the New Mexico Geological Society.
