Mission StatementThe Africana Studies Program at the University of New Mexico uses an interdisciplinary approach to uncover and examine the historical, political and cultural experiences of peoples of Africa and of African-descent in New Mexico, the Southwest, the Americas, and across the global diaspora. We are committed to educating and encouraging students of all races and ethnicities to think critically about the interplay of race in the lives of individuals, institutions, and societies. We seek to enhance students' awareness of and commitment to issues of social justice and community service. |

Please show your love and support for retired UNM faculty, Dr. Maisha Baton, as she journeys to be with family.
Dr. Baton is an important local and national treasure and has worked with famous American Playwright August Wilson. She received her masters degree in existential psychology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA and her doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. She has taught numerous courses on the black experience at the University of Pittsburgh and at the University of New Mexico. In fact, she retired from the Africana Studies Program in May, 2009 after 25 years of dedicated service. To see her bio click here.

Sonia Gipson Rankin and Dr. Jamal Martin were invited speakers at a student led and created health care reform rally Wednesday, November 4, 2009 in the SUB Atrium. With the health care debate sweeping the nation, Dr. Gipson Rankin spoke about the vital role of student activism from a historical perspective. Dr. Jamal Martin moved the crowd with his strong presentation about the social determinants of health and the ramifications of not only addressing health care insurance, but the deeper topic of equal health care and standards of living for all.
Africana Studies welcomes Dr. Belinda Deneen Wallace to its faculty as a Visiting Lecturer. Dr. Wallace comes with academic expertise in Comparative Literature, African American and Africana Studies, and English. She is currently teaching Foundations of Africana Studies and Black Women Filmmakers and will teach two additional courses in the spring. Stop by Mesa Vista #4019 and give her a strong welcome!

The great civilization of Egypt, with its pharaohs and remarkable cultural artifacts, has captivated the world for centuries. For two weeks during the UNM holiday break, The University of New Mexico Africana Studies Program & The Department of Foreign Languages & Literature will offer an opportunity to study Egypt in Egypt with renowned Dr. Mohamed Ali.
