BACHELOR OF ARTS IN AFRICANA STUDIES

The interdisciplinary major in African American Studies approaches the study of the historical, cultural, and intellectual development of people of African descent from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Students are expected to follow a cross-disciplinary program with a strong research skill emphasis.  The B.A. requires 128 hours including completion of the Arts & Sciences distribution, UNM Core Curriculum and other UNM requirements.  39 of the 128 must be taken from African-American Studies (15 of the 39 must be 300 level and above) distribute as follows:

The B.A. in African American Studies as a second major will require 27 credit hours.  Plan of study will be designed by student and a faculty advisor to respond to student’s academic and professional needs. Af Am 284 and 285 are required.

THE SPECIALIZED MINOR DEGREE PROGRAM
requires twenty-four (24) credit hours with emphasis in economics, anthropology, history, or other disciplines offering adequate relevant courses. Students are required to take 12 hours of African-American Studies courses and the remaining 12 hours in their chosen field of emphasis. Several of the courses are cross-listed with Political Science, Educational Foundations, American Studies, English, Communications, and other departments.  

THE GENERAL MINOR DEGREE  PROGRAM  top
requires twenty-four (24) credit hours of African-American Studies courses including: Swahili, Foundation of African-American Studies, African-American History and Blacks in Politics.  Also required are twelve (12) hours of 300-level or above courses. A limited number of credits may be earned through independent study or problem courses.

The African-American Studies minor requires 24 hours, 15 hours of core courses, and 19 hours of electives in the College of Arts and Sciences.
