***November 10, 2009***

 

Thank you to everyone who helped out/attended the November general meeting, sack lunch sale and Halloween carnival! Lots of work but we carried everything out successfully!

 

Kaplan MCAT class auction: This auction is for a full classroom course, which retails for $1899. Auction ends at 11:59PM on December 1, so email us with your bid now! As of November 4, the highest bid is $750.

 

Benefit concert: Due to a series of unfortunate events, we are postponing this to January 28, 2010. Stay tuned for updates.

 

TAP Project: Help us bring clean water to people everywhere! Well, we don’t quite have the resources to do that, but we’re certainly trying :) The Global Health Action Committee is organizing an event to raise awareness about global water hygiene and how this is linked to a number of serious diseases/illnesses. Event scheduled for December 1st (see our “Meetings&Events” page for more details). Contact the appropriate committee chairs if you want to help out!

 

December General Meeting: Scheduled for Wednesday, December 2 5-6PM in the SUB Luminara room (3rd floor). Details to be announced.

National Coming Out Day is October 11. Diversity in Medicine AC is teaming up with the UNM Queer-Straight Alliance (QSA) to celebrate National Coming Out Day on Tuesday & Wednesday October 13-14. For details, check out our “Meetings & Events” page.

 

October General Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday October 13 5PM-6PM in the Santa Ana room on the 3rd floor of the SUB.

 

Halloween Carnival is only a few weeks away! Mark your calendars, tell all the kids you know, and email us (Health Awareness/Education Action Committee) because we really need your help!

 

Benefit concert. Our next planning meeting is October 12 @ 3PM in the SUB Lobo Lair. Everyone is welcome! So far, we have the following acts confirmed: 2 bands, 1 Brazillian samba group, and a classical guitarist. Know anyone who might be interested in playing for a really good cause? Let us know!!!

Healthy Sack Lunch sale. Big thanks to those who turned out to help! Our efforts raised over $200! We’re doing this again next month, so stay tuned for updates if you want to help.

 

Halloween Carnival. Health Awareness/Education Action Committee is looking for help obtaining donations to sell/raffle off. This can range from restaurant gift certificates to food to toys, … We also need some man and womanpower on the day of the event (October 30). Contact Caitlin, Celestina, or Stephanie.

 

Benefit concert. Global Health Action Committee is putting on a benefit concert with bands, Indian dances, African dances, and salsa dancing! We need help with recruiting people/groups to perform, food/merchandise donations, putting together slide slows and pamphlets on global health issues, and lots of smiling faces to help us run the event. Tentative date/location is November 12 in the SUB Ballrooms. Contact Phuong, Jared, or Radhika. Our next committee planning meeting is Monday October 5 in the SUB Lobo Lair @ 3pm. Anyone interested is very, very, very welcome to come.

 

October General Meeting. Save the DATE! Our second general meeting of the school year is October 13 5-6PM. Further details will be posted.

 

Action Committees. Our Action Committees are still recruiting for members. Email amsapm@unm.edu or the committee chairs with questions or to join. We are in the process of updating the website with AC information, so please stay tuned.

Planning is well underway for a Healthy Halloween Carnival, with proceeds to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. We still desperately need help with the planning process, so please email the Health Awareness/Education committee chairs if you want to help.

Welcome back to school! The first week is almost over, and we hope you all had an exciting time in your classes  :) 

 

For the 2009-2010 school year, we have lots of events and ideas lined up, but we need your help! It’s always more fun with more people, you get leadership/planning experience, meet new people, and learn lots about important health care issues. Come to our first meeting on Tuesday, September 8 to find out how you can be involved in shaping the future of medicine! For details, check out our Meetings & Events page.

***April 15, 2009***

 

Our general meeting on immigrant/minority health has been rescheduled (hopefully you got our email!) to Thursday April 23, 2009 @4PM in the Mirage/Thunderbird room (SUB 3rd floor). Dr. Jamal Martin, a faculty member in African American Studies and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Family/Community Medicine Department will be speaking.

 

The Health Fair has been rescheduled to Wednesday April 29 from 9AM-2PM @ Cornell Plaza (between SUB and Student Health Center). We desperately need human labor (both physical and intellectual)! Please email us at amsapm@unm.edu if you can help in any way—we would appreciate any help with planning stuff during the days leading up to the event, or actually the day of the event.

 

AMSA, in conjunction with PremedClub and Kaplan, is holding an MCAT 10-question challenge on April 20 @ 4:30PM in Santa Ana room (SUB 3rd floor). We will have a mini trivia game with MCAT study materials as prizes! (Prizes are limited to AMSA members only.)

A Health Fair is in the works! The date is April 30 from 9AM-2PM. More details to follow. Contact us if you want to help plan the event, because we need you!!!

 

The theme for our April General Meeting is Immigrant Health. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 4PM. Stay tuned for updates.

 

This semester’s Kaplan MCAT course auction was highly successful, both for you and us! The winning bid was $1300 ^_^ Congrats to the winner!

 

Speaking of the MCAT… AMSA and PreMed Club have teamed up with Kaplan to hold an MCAT event for you on April 20 at 4:30PM (location TBA). Come and test your MCAT skills with the 10-question challenge!
