World AIDS Day

water sanitation, hygiene, & disease

Tuesday,

December 1, 2009

11AM-1PM

Student Union Building, 2nd floor

The issue:

Almost 50% of the developing world’s population – 2.5B people – lack improved sanitation facilities, and over 884M people still use unsafe drinking water sources. Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kills and sickens thousands every day, and leads to impoverishment and diminished opportunities for thousands more (UNICEF).

What we’re doing

We hear a lot about how people in developing countries are afflicted by war, HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, etc. However, we hear a lot less about their struggles with water sanitation (water is so common—who would have thought that it’d be such a troublemaker???).

AMSA will be setting up a booth to raise awareness about how lack of clean water can affect people in detrimental ways. We’ll have posters and handouts with stories and facts and stats. There will also be water visual—come see what the water you drink look like vs. what the rest of the world has access to.

We’ll also be bugging people for donations, so stop by with your change! All donations go to Blood:Water Mission, a nonprofit organization that helps villages with resources and training to bring clean water, sanitation and healthcare into their communities.

National Coming Out Day (October 11)

Tuesday

October 13, 2009

10AM – 1:30PM

Cornell Plaza

(by the statues)

Wednesday

October 14, 2009

10AM – 1:30PM

Smith Plaza

(in front of Zimmerman Library)

Diversity in Medicine AC is teaming up with the UNM Queer-Straight Alliance (QSA) to celebrate National Coming Out Day (October 11)!!!

Traditionally, National Coming Out Day is an internationally-observed civil awareness day for coming out and discussion about gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. We want to use National Coming Out Day as a way to celebrate diversity in medicine, address LGBT healthcare issues & disparities, help both straight and LGBT medical students battle the
invisibility of LGBT individuals, show our support for LGBT patients, and finally promote our AC to hopefully recruit new members.

We plan to table, pass out pins/ribbons symbolizing diversity, hand out flyers that address LGBT healthcare issues & disparities, and of course, hand out candy to UNM students. There will be music, fun, and an hour-long “coming-out” session @ noon on both days for anyone who wants to announce their identity over the microphone for all of UNM to hear.

If you guys have the time and are interested in helping us, we would GREATLY APPRECIATE it! Email Adam at aquin7@unm.edu.

General Meeting: Health Policy & Advocacy

February 4, 2009

4PM

SUB Isleta

Do you believe in serving patients through health care reform?

Being a well-rounded pre-med means more than a good MCAT score and high GPA. It’s even more than the extracurricular activities. To present yourself as a competitive candidate, you also need to be knowledgeable about health care issues. It would be even better if you can demonstrate to medical schools that you not only know about such issues, but have also been involved in some way.

How do you become involved, you ask? Join us at the meeting to learn about health care legislation that are in Congress, and how you can participate in health care reform.

If health policy is not your thing… we will also be forming committees for various events this semester, and we’re looking for members. Here is your chance to end the humdrum of sitting in the audience at pre-med meetings!

Refreshments will be served :)

Malaria kills.

Send a net.

Save a life.

Every year between 350-500 million people are infected with malaria, and over one million of those infected die from the disease. The majority of these deaths are of children. Long

lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs) can lower malaria transmission by up to 90 percent.

Together, we can cover Africa with life-saving bed nets.

Join us for a documentary screening on the devastating effects of malaria and learn how simple $10 bed nets can save these children’s lives.

Admission is $10, and proceeds go towards purchase of bed nets.

We will have music and hot cocoa!

General Meeting

Universal Health Care

Wednesday

October 8, 2008

4:30PM

Acoma room, Student Union Building

Missed the meeting? Click here for an overview of what we did.

Time: Wednesday, October 8, 2008 @ 4:30PM

Location: Acoma room, Student Union Building

At its root, the lack of health care for all in America is fundamentally a moral issue. The United States is the only industrialized nation that does not have some form of universal health care (defined as a basic guarantee of health care to all of its citizens). While other countries have declared health care to be a basic right, the United States treats health care as a privilege, only available to those who can afford it. In this sense, health care in America is treated as an economic good like a TV or VCR, not as a social or public good.

Do you agree or disagree?

Come listen to Dr. Bruce Trigg speak on the current state of the U.S. health care system and universal health care. Dr. Trigg has been with the New Mexico Department of Health for the past 20 years. He also serves as the Medical Director of the Public Health Program at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque. Dr. Trigg is Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics and Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.

There will be ample time afterwards for an informative yet fun discussion—bring your arguments for or against universal health care. It’s bound to be an intellectually stimulating meeting!

Interested in going away for a weekend to learn more about Global AIDS or Universal Health Care?

Do you want to shadow a physician (or other health practitioners)?

Are you interested in long-term volunteer opps?

Is Las Vegas or Washington D.C on your list of places to visit?

Do you want personal advice about medical school from someone who used to sit on an admissions committee?

Find out more by joining us at the first meeting!

We have some awesome opportunities lined up for you, and we want you to take advantage of everything we have to offer. In addition to discussing the above, we will also be giving away a new copy of the MSAR (Medical School Admissions Requirements) book. If you are not already aware, the MSAR is commonly known to pre-meds as "the bible of medical school guides". In addition, if you plan on taking the MCAT (which we hope all of you are), and are interested in discounts on a prep course, we have the inside scoop on how!

If any of these sounds appealing to you, join us to find out more! We look forward to seeing some familiar and new faces!

Stay tuned for future meetings & events!
