World
AIDS Day water sanitation, hygiene, & disease |
Tuesday, December 1, 2009 11AM-1PM Student Union Building, 2nd floor |
The issue: Almost 50% of
the developing world’s population – 2.5B people – lack improved sanitation
facilities, and over 884M people still use unsafe drinking water sources.
Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor
hygiene practices, kills and sickens thousands every day, and leads to
impoverishment and diminished opportunities for thousands more (UNICEF). What we’re
doing We hear a lot
about how people in developing countries are afflicted by war, HIV/AIDS, TB,
malaria, etc. However, we hear a lot less about their struggles with water
sanitation (water is so common—who would have thought that it’d be such a
troublemaker???). AMSA will be
setting up a booth to raise awareness about how lack of clean water can
affect people in detrimental ways. We’ll have posters and handouts with
stories and facts and stats. There will also be water visual—come see what
the water you drink look like vs. what the rest of the world has access to. We’ll also be
bugging people for donations, so stop by with your change! All donations go
to Blood:Water Mission, a nonprofit organization that helps
villages with resources and training to bring clean water, sanitation and healthcare
into their communities. |

Meeting: Health Policy & Advocacy |
|
Do you believe in serving patients through health care reform? Being a well-rounded pre-med means more than a good MCAT score and
high GPA. It’s even more than the extracurricular activities. To present
yourself as a competitive candidate, you also need to be knowledgeable about
health care issues. It would be even better if you can demonstrate to medical
schools that you not only know about such issues, but have also been involved
in some way. How do you become involved, you ask? Join us at the meeting to learn
about health care legislation that are in Congress,
and how you can participate in health care reform. If health policy is not your thing… we will also be forming
committees for various events this semester, and we’re looking for members.
Here is your chance to end the humdrum of sitting in the audience at pre-med
meetings! Refreshments will be served :) |
|
|
|
It’s MCAT season again! We’re sure you are all excited! The preparation process is hard in a number of ways—intellectually,
psychologically, etc.—and yes, even financially. If you are thinking of
taking a prep course, but are not sure if it’s right
for you, check this event out! |
