Graduate Assistantships

There are two types of assistantships offered in the department each year for enrolled students: Graduate assistant positions, and teaching positions.

Fellowships for admissions: Approximately eight Graduate Assistantship fellowships are offered to high-ranking applicants each year. There is no need to apply for this assistantship.

Graduate Assistantships for enrolled students: All graduate students in good standing with the department are eligible to receive at least a one-year Graduate assistantship, however as these are cycled through the student body, it may be several years before the assistantship may become available. Students must apply in the spring to be considered.

Teaching positions: Students with a Master’s degree or advanced to doctoral candidacy and in good standing in the department may be eligible for various teaching positions, both within anthropology and in other departments. Because these opportunities come from a different funding source the pay and benefits are usually not as appealing as the Graduate Assistantship. However, these positions do not reduce eligibility for receipt of a Graduate Assistantship and they do provide experience and training for graduate students.

Research/Project Assistantships

Research and Project assistantships are offered occasionally by various faculty in the department.
