The Ruth E. Kennedy Award is given annually by the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology to honor the memory of Ruth E. Kennedy, wife of Edwin L. Kennedy, a major donor to the museum. Initiated in 1981, the award recognizes Mrs. Kennedys abiding interest in public education.
Nature/Requirements of the Award
Student receives an honorarium of approximately $100 and delivers a public lecture (TBA) sometime in Spring.
- Ph.D. with an exceptional academic record
- Must have passed Ph.D. Special Exam
- Dissertation prospectus must be approved
- Dissertation research must be completed and at least in the analysis phase
- If dissertation is completed, the defense must have been within the past year
Nomination Procedure (Each Sub-field)
- Ascertain that potential candidate is eligible
- Ascertain that candidate is able to give the lecture in Spring
- Be prepared to make a short presentation on the candidate's qualifications at the next faculty meeting
- Be prepared to introduce the successful candidate to the audience before the talk
Responsibilities of the Kennedy Awardee
Prepare for Katherine Linden, Public Affairs Director of the Maxvvell, no later than mid February
- Name of Candidate as s/he wishes it to appear in print
- Title of talk
- Brief description of the talk and any audio-video equipment needed
- Short biography for publicity purposes
- List of people to be invited
- Give the lecture on the selected date, bearing in mind that the presentation is for a general audience
