Education
The goal of the UNM Art Museum Education Program is to foster meaningful
relationships between visitors and works of art. Because visitors range
in age from toddlers to octogenarians, come from diverse cultural backgrounds
and have a variety of life experiences, and because the exhibitions they
visit are ever-changing, our education programs are flexible but grounded
in core principles:
- Learning is a life-long process in which we are all engaged;
- Learning to “see” involves
slowing down perception, making connections and being aware of our
emotional responses;
- Learning is constructed through social interaction; and
- Through active explorations in perception, reflection and discussion,
visitors will forge meaningful connections to works of art.
Programs:
The UNM Art Museum offers guided visits for school groups (see Education
Brochure below for directions on how to schedule a field trip); high
school internship opportunities; Evenings for Educators; Teacher Institutes;
and professional development. Educational materials (click downloadable
links below) are aligned with New Mexico State Standards and Benchmarks.

Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century
October 13, 5:30-6:30
Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century is the only series on television to focus exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists in the United States, and it uses the medium of television to provide an experience of the visual arts that goes far beyond a gallery visit. The UNM Art Museum is pleased to host this pre-screening of an episode of the fifth season of the PBS series Art:21. Compassion features threeartists - William Kentridge, Doris Salcedo, and Carrie Mae Weems - whose works explore conscience and the possibility of understanding and reconciling past and present, while exposing injustice and expressing tolerance for others.

Abstraction
For many critics, historians, and artists, abstract
painting was the most singular achievement of 20th century art. In an exhibition
of 24 paintings from the permanent collection by artists including Raymond
Jonson, Agnes Martin, Frederick Hammersley, Oli Sihvonen, and Richard Diebenkorn.
We explore a full range of abstract styles, from simple geometry to expressive
gesture.
This exhibition is mounted in conjunction with a major
teaching unit on abstraction, developed by Art in the School, Inc., for
use in Albuquerque Public Schools classrooms.

Gallery Guide. Art, Culture, Place: Visual Traditions
of the SouthWest
Responses to place and to cultural heritage are the
unifying elements of any region but they are most strikingly apparent in
the Southwest. Exploring the artistic richness of the region, Art, Culture,
Place: Visual Traditions of the Southwest questions what we understand
about artistic traditions and even what the concept of the Southwest itself
means. Since well before the Spanish Entrada but particularly so in the
twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the Southwest has been a cultural
meeting ground. From the archeological past to the present, arts of Native
American, Hispanic, and Anglo artists as well as those from increasingly
diverse cultures reveal the impact of the region and the interrelated expressions
engendered by cultural exchange. *The educational Gallery Guide for this
exhibition is available as a download in .PDF format, just click the link
