What You Need to Know About Incompletes

You should not see an A&S Advisor to get an Incomplete removed.

You should make an appointment with the instructor who assigned the Incomplete so that you can finish all requirements for the course in question.

The instructor, not an A&S advisor, will fill out a form and send it directly to the Records Office.

The A&S Advisement Center cannot do this for you. You must meet with the instructor who assigned the Incomplete.

Students resolving Incompletes in their semester of graduation must have the process completed (including the reporting of the grade to the Records and Registration Office) by the deadline. Students are responsible for informing instructors that they are graduating and that the grades must be reported by the appropriate deadline. Failure to complete the process as described could result in the postponement of graduation until the following semester.

An Incomplete that is not resolved will change into an F on the student's record if not resolved within one academic year from the assignment of the Incomplete.

Ex:  A student receives an “I” for Econ 105 in the Spring of 2007.  This student has until the end of Spring 2008 to complete the requirements and have the instructor of record hand in the grade.

Grades of “I” (incompletes) can have a negative effect on a student’s record with regards to Financial Aid and the completion rate.  If you have questions or concerns about this, please visit Financial Aid.

Students with Incompletes on their student records are ineligible for graduation--even in the event that the class for which the Incomplete is assigned is not itself needed for the completion of graduation requirements.

For more information please refer to the UNM Catalog (Student Services Information section).
