Faculty Promotion and Tenure Policies /Procedures Return to Information for Faculty page
The key text for faculty is the Faculty Handbook. The Handbook spells out university-wide guidelines for annual review, mid-probationary review, tenure and promotion and promotion to professor.
The Handbook also contains policies for Post-Tenure Review. The following outlines information specific to the College concerning faculty review processes at each of these stages.
Questions concerning the review process that cannot be answered by the Department Chair should be referred to Philip Gonzales, Associate Dean for Faculty in the Arts and Sciences office.
Promotion & Tenure/Mid-Probationary Review Procedures:
The College follows the Faculty Handbook procedures. In addition each Department has developed a set of performance standards reflective of expectations in the discipline. These standards are made available to new faculty at the time of appointment. Each Department also develops a procedure for senior faculty reviews and discussion of the candidates. The Chair’s responsibility is to help the candidate develop the file, to follow department and university procedures for conducting reviews, to accurately summarize the results of the departmental review, and finally, to provide her/his own evaluation and recommendation on each case. In the case of a negative finding here, or at any of the next levels, the candidate has an opportunity for appeal. Consult the Faculty Handbook for information on the appeal process.
When the file is delivered to the College office, it is evaluated by a committee of nine faculty broadly representative of the disciplines in our unit. There are two such committees—a junior committee that reviews the mid-probationary and tenure/promotion cases and a senior committee that reviews promotion to full professor. The file is also evaluated by the Associate Dean for Faculty. The Dean, taking all these reports and the documents in the file into consideration, makes the College recommendation on the case. The file then is sent to the Provost’s office for the final series of reviews.
Cases for Mid-Probationary action are due to the Dean in early February and go to the Provost in early April. The other cases are due to the Dean in early January and go to the Provost in early March.
Guidelines for Submitting Mid-Prob/Promotion & Tenure materials
Mid-Prob/Promotion & Tenure Forms:
The Department Administrator in each unit works with faculty on the details of organizing the file.
Annual Reviews: (moved from below “Tenure and Promotion Policies and Practices” title)
All tenure-track faculty are subject to annual review. Normally these reviews take place in the spring and are based on a yearly report prepared by each faculty member. Each department has guidelines for the information contained in the review. Junior faculty annual reviews normally include some consultation by the chair with senior faculty; reviews for tenured faculty are conducted according to individual post-tenure policies developed at the department level. In all cases the faculty member receives a copy of the review and an opportunity to discuss it with the chair. Copies of these reviews are sent to the Dean’s office.
Post-Tenure Review:
In addition to the general guidelines in the Faculty Handbook, each Department has developed a set of performance expectations for tenured faculty in their area. Annual reviews of tenured faculty must be shared with the faculty member and he/she has an opportunity for appending additional information to the Chair’s review and for appealing an annual review to the Dean. Consult the Faculty Handbook for information on the appeal process. Each Department has developed a set performance standards reflective of the expectations in the discipline.
