Additional information on sick leave and leave covered by the Federal Family Medical Leave Act is also included in the University Business Policies and Procedures Manual.
Sabbatical leave is available to faculty members with tenure and faculty members in the last year of their probation period for whom a favorable decision has been reached with regard to tenure. Please refer the the College's Sabbatical guidelines for details and deadlines.

The purpose of the Research Semester is to assist the faculty member advance his or her research program. The College of Arts & Sciences offers assistant professors in the College the opportunity of a one-semester release from classroom teaching. This release does not include exemption from other department obligations such as graduate committee work and departmental service.
The junior faculty member who receives the offer of the Research Semester at the time of hire must apply for it at least one semester in advance during his or her probationary period and prior to the year of review for tenure and promotion. The key stipulations are (1) an active research program with clear publication/grant funding goals, and (2) an agreement to teach a normal load at UNM for two semesters following the research leave. Faculty members will work with their department chair to determine the most appropriate semester for the release.
