Overview

This survey course examines the relationship between the brain mechanisms (e.g. neurons, neurotransmitters, and hormones) and behavior (e.g. seeing, hearing, moving, sleeping, speaking, learning, and remembering). The content of the course falls into three areas: a. basic building blocks of the brain: neurons and neurotransmitters; b. sensory and motor systems; c. biological rhythms, emotion, memory, and language.

If you have no biology background, this course will be a little challenging. You will have to learn about the brain from scratch. Some chapters may appear to be very hard and dry. But conquering them is possible with good study habit, and is necessary for understanding the subsequent material. If you keep up with all the reading and exercise, attend all classes, and ask questions during class and office hours, you should do well.
