Materials Research Center

The ATR Institute operates the Materials Research Center—a major activity which brings improved technology to the design, construction, and maintenance of highway pavement in New Mexico.  The Center also works to improve the cost-benefit ratio over the life of highway projects.  The Center is operated in cooperation with the New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department (NMSHTD) for the benefit of its District Engineers in the six districts around the State.  Projects for which the Center has responsibility include the following:

  • Evaluation of Non-Destructive Testing Methods

  • High Performance Concrete and Alkali Silica Reactivity

  • NMSHTD Lab Bureau

  • Non-Nuclear Testing Devices

  • Road Lifecycle Innovative Financing Evaluation—NM 44

  • Whitetopping of Airport Runways

  • Better Approaches to Embankment Problems

  • High Performance Concrete for Bridge Structures

  • Use of Copper Slag for Aggregate

  • More Innovative and Cost-Effective Rumble Strip Application
