Evaluation of US 550 Geotechnical Data and Pavement Performance by Margarita Polanco, Universidad del Cauca (Colombia) (June 2004) (PDF:2MB/86 pages) - Written for the New Mexico Department of Transportation, Research Bureau - New Mexico (State Route 44), now known as US 550, is an important route for improving economic development in northwest New Mexico. For this reason the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) decided to reconstruct and expand it from a two-lane highway into a four-lane divided highway, in a reasonable time period and within the budget established by the New Mexico State Legislature. To help to achieve this goal, NMDOT utilized an innovative design concept, construction management and financing ideas, and a warranty for pavement and structure performance. The project was developed under this innovative approach, and the design and construction were completed under separate contracts. The 118 mile-long project was divided into eight segments for purposes of design and bidding. |
