Since 1917, the Spirit Marching Band has been an integral part of athletics on campus and a promoter of university morale. As one of the largest and most visible groups on campus, we have a three-point mission.

  1. Serving the University of New Mexico as first-class ambassadors on the field and in the classroom.

  1. Supporting the Lobos with unceasing passion! Win or lose, rain or shine, the Spirit Marching Band continues to cheer on our teams.

  1. Engaging and inspiring our fans through the highest quality performances our combined efforts can produce.

Class Time / Rehearsals

Summer band camp will take place August 14–18, 2023, on the UNM campus. Students living in residence halls will have early access to move in.

Fall rehearsals take place M/W/F from 3:00–5:00pm on Johnson Field (or in CFA B120 during inclement weather). Game day rehearsals happen on Saturday from 9:00–11:00am in the IPF (indoor practice field). Attendance is required at all rehearsals and performances.

If you want to participate in marching band, please tell your academic advisor during scheduling. Class conflicts can often be resolved through advanced planning and communication. Please reach out to Dr. Harman (gharman@unm.edu) if you have concerns about conflicts.

The full rehearsal and performance schedule will be provided during band camp.

Participation Requirements and Enrollment Information

Unlike many Division I marching bands, the Spirit Marching Band allows participation to both degree- and non-degree-seeking students. In previous years, non-degree-seeking marching members have included CNM (Central New Mexico Community College) students and non-traditional students who love marching band. Any potential member of the Spirit Marching band that is not a current UNM student is required to audition for Dr. Harman.

Per UNM policy, enrollment in one of the following courses is required:

MUSC 2735 (Undergraduate)

MUS 560 (Graduate)

Spirit Marching Band is a variable credit course for 1 or 0 hours. If you have question about enrollment or credit hours, contact Dr. Harman (gharman@unm.edu).

The Spirit Marching Band does not have alternates. Every member marches at every performance!

Information for Members Requiring Auditions

Any student currently enrolled at UNM is not required to audition for Spirit Marching Band. Anyone looking to participate with the Spirit Marching Band who is not actively enrolled at UNM should contact Dr. Harman (gharman@unm.edu) for audition materials. After a successful audition, more information about enrolling as a non-degree-seeking student will be provided.

The audition for marching band is not related to any other scholarship or audition for music at UNM.

Participation Scholarship

Members who complete the season, including attendance requirements at rehearsal and performances, are awarded a marching band scholarship to their bursar account. This scholarship starts at $400 during a member’s first year and increases $100 annually up to $700.
