1/ For 1990 these are 100% data. The Census 2000 data are based on a sample.
2/ Data for this category are not fully comparable for 1990 and 2000 because of a change in question
wording: from "Mobile home or trailer" in 1990 to "Mobile home" in 2000. The data are presented for
each census but because of the comparability issue the percent change is not calculated.
3/ Data for this category are not fully comparable for 1990 and 2000 because of a change in question
wording: from "Other" in 1990 to "Boat, RV, van, etc." in 2000. The data are presented for each
census but because of the comparability issue the percent change is not calculated.
4/ For both 1990 and 2000 the data are based on a sample. However, for 1990 the sample data were
controlled to 100% counts for "Total housing units" and for "Occupied housing units".
5/ For 1990 this category also includes structures built in the first three months (January through March)
of 1990. For Census 2000 this category includes only structures built in the 1980 to 1989 period.
Because of this difference the percent change is not calculated.
6/ For 1990 this category also includes occupied housing units where the householder moved in during
the first three months (January through March) of 1990. For Census 2000 this category includes only
occupied housing units where the householder moved in during the 1980 to 1989 period. Because
of this difference the percent change is not calculated.
7/ Data for this category are not fully comparable for 1990 and 2000 because of a change in question
wording. In Census 2000 the telephone question emphasizes the availability of service in the housing
unit. Data on telephone service are needed because an individual can own a telephone but have no
service to make or receive calls. In 1990 respondents were asked about the presence of a telephone
in the housing unit. The data are presented for each census but because of the comparability issue
the percent change is not calculated.
8/ For 1990 the number of "Specified owner-occupied units" differs between data on value (100% data)
and data on monthly owner costs (sample data). For 2000 data on both items were collected on a
sample basis.
9/ The 1990 median figures are adjusted for the effects of inflation and restated in terms of 2000 dollars.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI-U-RS), created by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and revised
annually, was used to determine the appropriate inflation factor. The revised CPI-U-RS series, released
in April 2002 by the BLS, shows that the index value for 1990 was 196.3. For 2000 it was 250.8. The
factor to adjust to 2000 constant dollars is 250.8/196.3 or 1.277636. Because the index numbers are
revised annually the factors to adjust to constant dollars will continue to change slightly over time.
10/ Household income refers to income in 1989 for 1990 data and income in 1999 for 2000 data.
