* Rankings are based on unrounded numbers. Therefore, identical rounded values
may appear in the table, but ranks may differ. However, in the case of a true
tie, counties share the same rank and the next lower rank is omitted.

1/ The 1980 total population figures shown in this table are unrevised. They are
consistent with the various characteristics appearing in the rest of this section
    in the web site.

2/ Cibola County was organized from a portion of Valencia County in July 1981.
Therefore, 1980 population characteristics are not explicitly available for
Cibola or "new" Valencia counties. Instead, 1980 figures for the two counties
were estimated by aggregating data for census county divisions (CCDs). The
CCDs are subcounty areas that can be summed to approximate the current boundaries
of each county. These approximate 1980 boundaries are not identical to the 1990
county boundaries. However, the boundary errors are fairly minor and occur in
relatively unpopulated areas. Therefore, the 1980 data for the approximated
counties are reasonably comparable to the 1990 data for the actual counties.
The sum of Fence Lake, Grants, Laguna and Zuni-Ramah CCDs approximates Cibola
County, while the Belen and Los Lunas CCDs approximate Valencia County.
