Third Line Construction

Similar to the BBMSL architecture main collection, the third line classification number of Native American tribal architecture collections defines context or structure type, image, and sequence.

As new structure types are introduced into the tribal collection, please refer to the Building Type Designation listing under Architecture in Collection Catalogue Volume I when creating a new structure type number and definition for this listing.

Use AAT descriptive terms especially for images of 3-d models and drawings (refer to the visual work term list & glossary following this document.)

09-19 SITE & CONTEXT (space)

    9 - site map describing location within a region. Note if the map specifies orientation and/or scale. (regional maps are placed in map collection 040. Site plans are classified as 11 on this listing)

    10 - 3-d model, non-photo 2-d work, or photographic view that represents or explains design concepts, architectural elements, or construction methods *typical* to a site or settlement (including photogrammetry, diagrams)

    Images that show representations of a specific built structure are catalogued with that structure.

    11 - non-photo 2-d representation of a site or settlement including axonometric, orthographic (note if the drawing specifies orientation and/or scale) & perspective drawings

    12 - photograph showing aerial, distant or general view of a site or settlement (including satellite photos)

    13 - photograph showing partial view of a site or settlement (open space features:plaza, court, road, stair, path, waste or ash pile, midden, signalling station)

    15 - photograph showing view of settlement fortification, boundary, built edge (wall, gate, citadel)

    Earth enclosure (earthwork) is classified under #90

20-99 STRUCTURE TYPES (by function)

20-29 Structures with a primary use that involves special or sacred ritual and traditional governing:

    27 - sacred and/or ceremonial enclosure for ritual (meeting hall, kiva, sweat lodge, shrine, dance lodge, longhouse)

    28 - funerary shelter or enclosure for deceased (grave house, burial scaffold) Burial earth mound is classified under #90.

30-39 Structures that serve as a dwelling (a center of domestic life):

    33 - dwelling (a central place, base camp, home, pit dwelling, protokiva house)

    36 - multiple dwelling complex (pueblo dwelling, cliff dwelling)

    38 - seasonal camp or temporary shelter (fishing hut, hunting quarter, food gathering camp, war lodge, ramada)

    39 - portable structure (tipi)

40-49 Structures that serve creative learning

    45 - place for observing astronomical phenomena (sundial)

50-59 Structures that primarily function as a 20th C meeting place for governing and council

Note: Prior to the 20th century, tribal groups traditionally performed governing functions in ritual spaces. See also:20-29
    55 - meeting hall, council house, community house (including kashim [Inupiaq], qasgiq [Yupik], qarqi [Inupiaq])

60-69 Structures that serve public and recreational functions

    68 - ball court

70-79 Structures that serve industrial functions

    71 - grinding rooms, pottery making area

    72 - pit oven spaces

90-99 Structures (miscellaneous:earth, agrarian)

    90 - earthwork:earth mound (including platform, conical, ridgetop, burial & effigy), earth enclosure & embankment, hunting blind

    91 - rockwork (Bighorn Medicine Wheel)

    92 - waterwork:irrigation channel, water canal, bordered garden, terraced garden, reservoir

    96 - granary, storage bin
