Teaching and Outreach activities

In addition to the formal examples listed below, I also take 10-15 (unsupported) opportunities per year to give guest lectures in graduate classes, undergraduate classes, and K-12 schools; presentations and tours of museum and lab facilities to school and adult tour groups; participate in Open House, Student Days, and Astronomy Day events; design outreach activities and posters; and respond to email and personal inquiries about potential meteorite finds by members of the public.

2005
Field Trip Leader, University of New Mexico. Led 15 students, postdocs, and faculty from the Institute of Meteoritics to K/T boundary sites in Colorado and New Mexico for study and collection.

2004-present
Co-Investigator, Meteorite Museum Renovation, University of New Mexico. Working toward a complete renovation of the Meteorite Museum to make it a more effective interface between the Institute of Meteoritics (IOM), and the general public. Two of the main goals of this exhibit are 1) to reflect the current status of planetary sciences and portray the role that meteorites play in our understanding of the origin and evolution of our Solar System, and 2) to show the diversity of people and pathways that contribute to University research. Involved in choosing samples, writing text, consulting with local teachers, and fundraising aspects.

2003
Substitute lecturer, GEOL 3040, Geochemistry, Hawaii Pacific University.

2001
Assistant Instructor, GEOS 630 Graduate Seminar. Developed and led discussion in 17 weeks of a graduate-level seminar about the Moon. Included recent concepts of lunar history, petrology, physics, and remote sensing. Course Instructor: Larry Taylor, University of Tennessee.

1997-1999
NASA/Space Grant Fellowship for Outreach Activities. Developed and implemented a number of activities for elementary and middle school, including a rock cycle play, "find a meteorite" and local rock identification. Designed and constructed many educational displays. Guest speaker in >15 elementary and middle school classrooms and 6 "women in science" days. Science fair judge for 14 elementary and middle school science fairs.

1999-2000
Volunteer for Flandreau Planetarium (Tucson, AZ) in class demonstrations.

1997-1998
Volunteer for Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (Tucson, AZ) in Design and Planning Department.

1998-1999
President, Graduate and Professional Student Council. Oversaw and participated in the activities of the GPSC, the student government of the graduate student body. Represented graduate students to the University by participating in many committees and events, including the UA's NCA Reaccredidation effort and the search committee for the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies.

1998, 1999
Co-organizer, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Conference. Arranged a conference in Tucson for local planetary scientists to share recent work. Personal contributions included accepting abstracts and producing a program, coordinating audio-visual services, and chairing sessions during the conference.

1996-1997
Teaching Assistant, PtyS 109L Laboratory. A one-credit laboratory class designed to teach basic science to undergraduate non-science majors. Responsibilities included preparing the laboratory, giving a weekly lecture on the basic lab concepts, overseeing the laboratory activity, and grading lab reports. Also contributed to writing, design and revisions of several lab activities (Meteorites, Rocks & Minerals) Supervisors: Prof. Robert Strom and Prof. Hal Larson, University of Arizona.

1995
Webmaster. Designed and implemented Web pages for the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and Department of Planetary Sciences, http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/. Included gathering information, html coding, and graphic design and layout.
