Submission Guidelines
Nonfiction:
BSE publishes all genres of nonfiction. Pieces written for UNM classes as well
as those written outside of UNM are eligible for publication. Each submission
must receive faculty nomination. That includes pieces written outside of class
(see Faculty Nomination below). Submissions may be no longer
than twelve double-spaced pages. Authors must submit both a hard copy of their
work and a digital copy on CD.
Foreign Language Nonfiction:
All foreign language submissions must include a complete English
translation. The essay plus the translation may not exceed twelve
double-spaced pages. Each submission must receive faculty nomination.
Authors must submit both a hard copy of their work and a digital
copy on CD.
Photography
(Cover Photos and Photo Essays):
Photographs must be submitted in digital media formats. Submissions
must be submitted on CD in .gif, .jpg, or .tif format (minimum 300
pixels per inch). For optimal quality, it is highly recommended
that color photography be submitted at a resolution of 600 pixels
per inch at 8.5'' by 11''. Any accompanying text must be typed.
Photo essays must receive faculty nomination. Submissions strictly
for cover consideration do not require faculty nomination. If you
have further questions regarding photography submissions, please
contact bse@unm.edu.
Art (For the BSE Cover):
BSE gladly welcomes two-dimensional art (paintings, drawings, digital art, prints, etc.) and photographs of three-dimensional art (sculptures, models, jewelry, installation pieces, etc.) for cover consideration. Visual submissions must be submitted on CD in .pdf, .jpg, .psd, or .tif format (minimum 300 pixels per inch), as well as in hard copy as prints or slides. Any accompanying text must be typed. Cover art submissions do not require faculty nomination. If you have further questions regarding art submissions, please contact bse@unm.edu.

Faculty Nomination:
The nomination process is simple. BSE accepts faculty nominations from
any UNM faculty member. A nomination consists of several sentences (or
more) regarding the nominated piece’s merits, purpose, and any other information
the nominating faculty member considers pertinent. Each BSE submission
form contains space at the bottom for the faculty nomination. The submission
form is complete once this section has been filled out.
Turning In Your Submission:
Please return completed submission forms, faculty nominations, CDs, and submissions to Best Student Essays, Marron Hall Room 107. Authors can also email essay submissions to bse@unm.edu as Microsoft Word attachments, only if the corresponding submission forms and faculty nominations have also been hand-delivered to Marron Hall Room 107. Photography and art submissions may not be emailed.
Awards Policy
BSE gives out cash awards to the authors of first, second, and third place essays in each issue. Award decisions are made by a committee consisting of the BSE editor and the editorial staff. Each essay is judged through a blind-jury rating process. Awards go to those essays receiving the highest total points in different evaluation categories, including clarity of authorial intent, originality, and support of argument. Award recipients are announced each semester at the BSE reception.
